Junior Achievement helps local youth By Shelley Hanson Thanks again to the staff at the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Spirit Mountain Casino over 500 Grand Ronde and Willamina students participated in the Junior Achievement program. Each volun teer spent at least three hours in one of the local classrooms presenting the business and economic curriculum. This year we got a little help from one of our local business partners, Willamina Lumber contributed several volunteers to cover the Willamina Middle School program. The benefits of the Junior Achievement program include: 1) educating the next generation of leaders on basic business and economics prin ciples using fun, interactive materials; 2) contributing local business ex pertise to the schools adding knowledge and expertise not always avail able, and 3) skill building for the volunteers: Each volunteer has the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills while learning how to motivate students between the ages of 5 and 18. ' Specials thanks to each of these individuals for their contribution to JA in the Willamina School District. And an extra special thank you to Spirit Mountain Community Fund for funding the project. FOOD VENDORS: opportunity at State Park Champoeg State Park has an op portunity for persons, preferably CTGR Tillicum, interested in cook ing and selling indigenous food at "Indian Summer" held on Sept, 25 26. This event is a pioneer .celebra tion of the harvest and draws 3,000 people each day. The persons who participate in this event would need to be prepared to cook and serve items such as salmon, corn on the cob, frybread, or whatever else might be considered indicative of the "pioneer era," or indigenous.
