10 Smoke Signals Language series scheduled for this summer The CTGR's Language Specialist will host a series of six meetings in July and early August. These meetings will provide infor mation on current and future lan guage activities, gain feedback from interested community members, and to encourage future involvement by tribal members interested in lan guage revitalization. The Language Program encourages all interested individuals to attend. The meetings are scheduled for: Grand Ronde July 7 Portland July 8 Bend July 19 Salem July 26 Eugene July 28 A draft of long-term Community Language Goals document will be presented, for comment, at a follow up meeting scheduled for August 4 in Grand Ronde. For those inter ested but unable to attend this meet ing the draft document will be avail able by mail for comment. By Jeanne Larsen, Safety Committee "HOT TIPS" for the upcoming summer weather. We all know it's com ing. It's just a matter of what days we're going to have it and although we can not predict which days they will be, we want to be prepared! Keep water, juice, and thirst quenchers on hand. A jug of cool water and wash cloth for cooling down the body is good. The other day I saw a little plastic container to put water in with a fan attached to it that would work real well for helping to keep cool. Be creative, it's amazing what we can come up with. If transporting Elders, kids, or animals, please make sure they have water readily available to them. They could easily have a heat stroke or encounter heat exhaustion. Check with the Wellness staff for the symp toms of these problems or, better yet, don't put them in a position where it's necessary to know the symptoms. Small Business Workshop Capital Access held June 23 On June 23, a four-hour workshop will be held in Grand Ronde called . "Capital Access" and will cover ways folks can access loans to start-up their small businesses. The class will cover: the loan application process, the loan officer relationship, specific loan programs, and resources. Gaming Commission seeks comments The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon have filed a petition with the National Indian Gaming Commission for a certifi cate of self-regulation. One criteria for the issuance of a certificate is that the Tribe has a reputation for safe, fair and honest operation of the gaming activity.
