MAY 15, 1999 9 Members have fun learning about heritage By Marion Mericer The Oregon State University Class titled Grand Ronde Culture & Heri tage was a success this past Winter Term 1999. With a total of 16 par ticipants in the class, it focused on Native American Basketry of the lo cal area. There were readings, hands on basket making, and field trips. Class members learned the two main methods of basket making. Connie Graves taught the coil method and Sam Henny taught the class the twining method. Each class mem ber made at least two baskets. One of the field trips was to the Hallie Ford Museum on March 13 to attend the dedication of the Na tive American Basketry room to the Grand Ronde Tribe. This was a no table occasion for the Tribe, and the class was honored to have been in vited to attend. A basketry sympo sium was held at the museum throughout the event and students were able to meet several expert n r OA U i " D 1 V IT yinllITAIl fry xft V v pry- -a : 0 fx Top: The class displays their own hand-made baskets. Late filing results in less funding and delays in funding. Late filing impacts the Tribal Edu cation Program in that student "need" is greatly increased if other federal monies are not accessed. It is wise to research and apply to all available sources of funding. Stu dents: please submit a copy of your Federal Financial Aid application or a copy of your Student Aid Report immediately.
