May is Teen Pregnancy
Prevention Month
The Yamhill County-based Reduce
Adolescent Pregnancy Project
(RAPP) has provided some informa
tion and tips for parents to help their
children avoid teen pregnancy.
RAPP's mission is to raise awareness
of the problem of adolescent preg
nancy in Yamhill County, build com
mitment, unite communities, and co
ordinate information and services to
reduce adolescent pregnancies.
i TIPS FOR PARENTS
Supervise your children and
teens. Establish rules, curfews, and
standards of expected behavior,
preferably through an open process
of family discussion and respectful
communication.
Know your children's friends.
Friends have a strong influence on
each other, so help your kids become
friends with other kids whose fami
lies share your same values.
Discourage early, frequent,
and steady dating. Group activi
ties among young people are fine
and often fun, but allowing teens to
begin steady, one-on-one dating be
fore age 16 can lead to trouble.

Pay attention to age differ
ences. Take a strong stand against
your daughter dating a boy signifi
cantly older than she is. And don't
allow your son to develop an intense
relationship with a girl much
younger than he is.
Encourage life goals. Make
sure your children know that al
though their futures can include
parenthood and pregnancy, there
are other goals they should have as
well. The chances that your children
will delay having sexual experiences
are significantly increased if their
future appears bright.
Let your kids know that you
value education highly. Encour
age your children to take school se
riously and set high expectations
about their school performance.
Know what your kids are
watching, reading, and listening
to. The media is full of material
sending the wrong messages.
Communicate. Talk. Develop
close relationships with your chil
dren. Kids have a lot of questions
about love, relationships, and sex.
Don't be afraid to be specific!

the North Coast to the South Coast; and the third runs from the Columbia
River through Bend on the east side of the Cascade Mountains.
To participate call 800-322-3326 for the site and site manager nearest
you. Then check in at the location at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, and
you'll be ready to go! A site coordinator will get you started. If you have a
group of more than five people, please call the site coordinator at the num
