APRIL 15, 1999 5 Community Connection Oepyfcies face tribal amid county changes Grand Ronde substation relocates as deputies prepare for warm weather highway traffic By Deputy Tom O'Brien Changes, both noticeable and not so noticeable are taking place within the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The obvi ous change can be seen with the Grand Ronde substation, which was recently located to the Tribal Gover nance Center grounds.. Thanks to Tribal Council, along with the new office location comes the welcome news of additional deputies serving the Grand Ronde community. The added deputies are much needed as the workload has kept pace with the increase in the Grand Ronde community's population growth. Recently, much of our time has been spent on the highways, thanks in part to the spring weather we have witnessed. Some changes you will see on Highway 18 are already underway. The area between Wallace Bridge and Ft. Hill Road is no longer a pass ing zone for eastbound traffic. Other changes to the highway are coming. The elimination of this passing zone was one main concern expressed by the deputies and Grand Ronde citi zens in several recent meetings held with the Oregon Department of Transportation in Sheridan. Another change that will be obvi ous to most citizens is the county's tow ordinance. In April, Polk County will be initiating a new towing ordinance, that will be more in line with those of surrounding counties. Polk County's administrative fees are a bit less, but the criteria for towing vehicles now appears similar to those of Yamhill County. Those offenses covered by Deputy Tom O'Brien at the relocated sheriff substation. the new ordinance include driving while intoxicated, suspended, violat ing licensedriving restrictions, driv ing revoked, or uninsured. Hope fully, this will allow us to remove re peat offenders from our highways. For more information on the new towing ordinance, contact Sergeant Jeff Van Laanen at the Polk County Sheriff's Office, (503) 623-9251. 6ED CLASS SCHEDULE ESPECIALLY FOR TRIBAL MEMBERS: TU ES DAYS AND THURS DAYS 10 A.M. Small Business opportunity for area youth The Tribe's Small Business Development department is looking for youth who would consider entrepreneurship. A few business ideas for a youth group are fry bread sales, yard services, and babysitting. Given the scar city of jobs for youth in the area, this would be a good opportunity for a group of youth to come together and form their own business in lieu of a summer job.
