Completed applications must be postmarked April 30, 1999.
INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP applications are also
available. Deadline to apply is April 15, 1999 for new applicants and
April 1, 1999 for continuing recipients.

Second Hatfield Fellow sought
The Tribe is accepting applications
for the second Mark 0. Hatfield Con
gressional Fellowship. Each year,
the Hatfield Fellow will be selected
from Native American applicants to
serve as an intern for a member of
Oregon's Congressional delegation.
Applicants must be adult members
of a federally-recognized tribe in Or
egon, Washington, Idaho, or Mon
tana. Preference will be given to the
nine recognized Oregon tribes.

Registration fees available for
youth summer activities
Summer Sponsorship is a program designed to support tribal youth in
participating in summer activities, such as camps, schools, leadership, cul
tural, educational, sports, etc. Available for tribal youth enrolled in school,
grades K-12. Summer Sponsorship will pay a maximum of $200 towards
registration costs only. To request an application or for more information,

dents are responsible for returning a complete application.
Students: forms due Career Expo coming
Continuing Students: Please
submit a copy of your 1999-2000
Federal Financial Aid application to
the Tribal Education Department if
you plan to attend school that aca
demic year. The copies are due by
February 15 of every academic year
that you plan to attend school. Only
12 students have submitted this
document so far out of 85 students.
Chemeketa Community College
will host the Career Expo on April
15 at the their Salem Campus,
Building 7. Attend workshops, talk
with employers, tour the campus,
learn about nontraditional careers
and scope out a technology showcase.
The morning workshops will focus
on the needs of high school students
and the afternoon is geared more for
continuing and older students.

Applications have been mailed out for the Tribe's Annual Achieve
ment and Recognition Awards. Achievement and Recognition is a non
competitive award to recognize tribal members who are enrolled in school
kindergarten through 12th grades. The primary focus of the pro
gram is to honor students for academic, social, and leadership accom
plishments. The Education Division encourages all students to apply. Applica
tions must be returned to the Tribal Education office or postmarked by
May 1, 1999. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact

The date for the Annual Honor and Recognition Dinner for tribal
member graduates and their families will be announced in Smoke Sig
nals in the near future.
Elders to host Honor Day
Donations of mugs and raffle items needed
The Grand Ronde Tribal Elders
will be hosting a Elder Honor Day
on Friday, July 16.
The Elders are asking for dona
tions of art, jewelry, craft items, new
kitchen towels and accessory type
items. Donations do not have to be
Native American items and will be
used as prizes for bingo and raffles.
They also plan to give a potted
plant in a coffee mug as a welcome
gift to each guest. The Elders would
like to collect around 300 mugs.

box for the mugs at the Health and
Wellness Center. Your donations are
greatly appreciated.

Attention Elders who are still using their Blue Cross Blue Shield insur
ance card. This insurance was replaced with your current ODS health in
surance in 1997.
You should have one insurance card from ODS for your medical and vi
sion, and one from Standard for your dental needs. For more information
