7 MARCH 1, 1999 Diabetes: risk factors Submitted by Bonnie Tom, Wellness Coordinator The following is from the publica tion Elder Voices: Type II diabetes, formerly called "adult onset" diabetes, is occurring in Indian Country at levels now de scribed as "epidemic" by Indian health experts. The disease results from the body's inability to use in sulin effectively. Type II diabetes is not contagious that is, you can't catch it from someone else but it is related to risk factors: D Heredity (if both parents have it, you have a greater chance of get ting it). D Being overweight. D Not being physically active. Ed. Committee Applications are being accepted for openings on the Education Commit tee, which meets once a month, and two planning sessions a year. Education is very important to the committee at all levels. For more information contact Darlene Aaron at (503) 876-5795. D Not following a healthy meal plan. D Age. Elders have higher diabetes health risks: D More than one out of five Indian elders has diabetes. D The risk of developing diabetes increases with age. O Rates of diabetes are highest in American Indians over the age of 65. D In some Indian communities, more than half the Elder population has diabetes. D Indian Elders suffer form higher . rates of complications than other age groups. D Diabetes is the third most com mon reason for Indian Elder clinic visits. Survev complete, thanks to Elders mm The Wellness Component would like to extend a huge "Thank You" to all that participated in the Diabetes Survey. Approximately 285 surveys were returned. There were many comments shared and we will be re sponding to most of the questions in a monthly article in Smoke Signals. Winner of the $50 drawing is Klarice Westly. Also, fifteen names were drawn for Fun Run Walk T shirts and they are in the mail. Elders to host Honor Day in July Donations of mugs and raffle items needed The Grand Ronde Tribal Elders have decided to host their first Honor Day. They will be inviting other Oregon tribes. On Friday, July 16, the Honor Day will start with lunch and end with a salmon dinner. The afternoon will be filled with fun as they play bingo, raffle prizes, and hand out awards for topics such as oldest Elder. Sat urday morning will be a "send-off breakfast" wishing their visitors a safe journey home. The Elders are asking for dona tions of art, jewelry, craft items, new kitchen towels and accessories. Do nations do not have to be Native American items and will be used as prizes for bingo and raffles. They also plan to give a potted plant in a coffee mug as a welcome gift to each guest. The Elders would like to collect around 300 mugs. To donate mugs or prize items, please contact Kerrie Jones, Jill Jeffers or Bonnie Tom at 879-2078 or 1-800-422-0232. There is a drop box for the mugs at the Health and Wellness Center. Your donations are greatly appreciated.
