Smoke Signals
Cylwe, landscaping class conclude
By Marion Mercier
Higher Education Coordinator
Culture & Heritage
The Grand Ronde Culture and
Heritage class was well-attended this
past Fall Term. There were fifteen
students in the class and the subject
matter included translating oral his
tories onto paper and gathering in
formation. Several guests gave pre
sentations to the class. June Olson
provided valuable information about
the early history of the reservation
area. June also guided the class on
a field trip to the Fort Yamhill site in
Grand Ronde. Jackie Whisler, Ex
ecutive Secretary, and Patricia Allen
(from Warm Springs Culture Pro
gram) met with the class and talked
about the events that led up to res
toration. Mike Wilson from Natural
Resources talked to the class about
land acquisition and properties the
Tribe now owns and explained dif
ferences between fee land, trust
land, and reservation land. Mark
Mercier from Tribal Council edu
cated the class on current issues in
tribal government and Indian Coun
try. Lisa Watt from the Culture
Board helped the class brainstorm
ideas for the new cultural center
museum.
The final class project was to write
a short story on information gath
ered in class. Hopefully, a book will
be compiled with all the stories some
time this month. A big potluck was
held on the last day of class.
Another culture class, sponsored by
the Education Division began on
January 9. It is a college credit class
and will be held on Saturdays
throughout the term. Please call
Marion Mercier for more information.
Landscaping Design
The last landscaping class was held
December 9. Fifteen people attend
the 10-week course. Subjects cov
ered included design and planning,
soil preparation and amendments
irrigation and planting, plant selec
tion, trees and shrubs, and lawn es
tablishment and maintenance.
The class also went on a field trip
to view different types of landscap
ing on both private and commercial
sites. The Education Division may
offer a similar class Spring Term. If
you are interested contact the Edu
cation Division to sign up.
