The program, which helps tribal members overcome barriers to em ployment, has greatly enhanced their lives within a short period of time. The dedication of all VEEP clients, Tracie Meyer, Jon George, Patti Tom, and especially Cheryle Ken nedy has proven that tribal members can work together to achieve the goals of all Native Americans. The goal to take care of our people. The clients of this particular pro gram have earned and gained new respect for themselves and their Na tive American culture. Those who have not taken the opportunity to ex plore further, we invite you back. Those who are about to come on board, we welcome you with open hearts. Although regrettably, none of Tribal Council were able to attend because of their hectic schedules and short notice, we welcome them to visit the Portland Outreach office. A special thank you to the young ladies at Nanitch Sahallie for serving the lunch, and also attending the pre sentation. Of course, the Health and Wellness personnel who invited us to their retreat and gave us a chance to represent tribal members from the Portland area. In spirit, Baxter Archuleta . Roll 1740 Dear Editor: I am in favor of the name "Smoke Signals." Having said that I would like to be on record as saying I am real uncomfortable with the actions taken by Tribal Council. I believe this incident took place innocently enough, with no malice by Council or the newspaper editor. It was clearly an oversight by both parties. Our tribe is still a democracy gov erned by the people. The issue could simply have been brought up in ref erendum format in our next election and simply voted on by the tribal membership. If this would have been done our Tribal Council would not have been embarrassed by the fact that they had (temporarally) given ap proval on the name change without checking with the general member ship and taken into consideration that it might have such a dramatic affect on such a large number of tribal members. If we are going to have a democ racy and empower our people then let's govern our people with the re spect they most assuredly deserve and afford each and every one of them the opportunity to participate not only in our decision-making, but the governing of our own destiny. In doing so, you will find that the wis dom and integrity of your people will take you to the next millennium with pride and dignity. Remember, a people without a voice is a history our grandfathers suffered. Is this a history we are destined to repeat, or will we empower our own people to choose their own destiny? Respectfully, J. Dear tribal members, I would like to take this time to give special thanks to the Community Re sources Department. I have been liv ing in Georgia with my two children and recently tried to move home to Oregon to be with my mom during her illness when my car broke down on the way. My children and I were stranded. Community Resources acted quickly to help me fix my car so that my children and I could con tinue home. An extra thanks to Linda Olson, Pam Warren, and Ron Hudson for caring enough to help us and so quickly. I could not have done it with out you. My mom and I ap preciate this very much. You guys are great! Melody Smith, Roll 1933 Julie Little, Roll 1899
