By Oscar Johnson, Staff Reporter
On November 6, the Grand Ronde Tribe celebrated the grand
opening of the new Governance Center honoring the courageous
efforts and sacrifices members have made on behalf of their tribe
throughout the decades. Elders, Tribal Council and scores of other
members and guests gathered in the
main ceremonial area of the elabo
rate 40,000 square foot structure to
honor what to most represented a
monument to tribal achievements.
"I think it's fantastic, I never
dreamed we would come this far,"
said Tribal Council member, Val
Grout. "I can remember going with
my mom to the old building when
they canned foods in the kitchen and
there was a back room where tribal
Elders used to quilt if they could
see this now."
;
f
Grout's sentiments echo those of
other Council members including,
Council Chairperson, Kathryn Har
rison. Harrison, visibly moved by the
event, recalled the bare-bones ac
commodations of the old tribal head
quarters during her welcoming
speech for the opening.
"I remember how far we had to go
just to get water from the spigot for
coffee or the 22 steps we had to take
in the cold and snow to get to the 'his'
and 'hers,'" she reminisced. She
added that "the first two days in our
new offices we felt like we were
guests."

Moonlight Pour: Rip Caswell does it again
By Tracy Dugan, Editor
. It doesn't seem like three years ago that artist Rip Caswell sculpted the twice-life-size statue of Martha
Jane Sands to adorn the entrance of Spirit Mountain Casino. Time passes quickly. And
now another bronze sculpture has been completed at the Caswell Foundry in
Troutdale this time to be placed in the foyer of Spirit Mountain Lodge, the
iribe s new
hotel, sched
uled to open on
December 21.
The sculpture, a
water fountain
which includes a
life-size bronze
coyote, salmon,
and a forest scene,
was poured last
month at Caswell Gal
lery and Foundry,
The, bronze fountain
will hold self-circulating
water.
