6 Tribal Life The Grand Ronde Review Youth captures experience of a lifetime Tribal youth receives silver medal 7flv Tribal member JACK GRANT, grandson of Russell Leno and Helen Leuzinger, and son of Steve and Jackie Grant of La Grande,' Oregon, experi enced a once in a lifetime opportu nity. He was one of three people to draw a California Big Horn Sheep tag in the Beaty Butte Unit in southeastern Or egon. Jack and his dad spent eleven days scouting and hunting, south of the Steens Moun- ; tains on the Catlow Rim, for the elu sive sheep. In the afternoon of the last day's hunt, Jack spotted four rams, approximately 400 yards away. After waiting for the rams to move out of site, they jogged across the draw to get within rifle range. To their surprise they had moved within forty feet of the rams. Suddenly, the lead ram appeared and bolted across the draw. Jack kept his eye on the other three rams, partially hidden behind a rock out-cropping. The i v 1 .f -,r J . -, .v-r: t-i.j vAv . mm 1: -rVvOC; rams stood and hesitated, trying to figure out what was going on. They began to run, following the lead ram. Undaunted, Jack zeroed in on one of the rams and fired his rifle from 60 yards. "It all happened so fast, I still can't believe it," says Jack. Jack is fourteen years old and a freshman at La Grande High School. He enjoys playing sports such as, football, basketball, and baseball. He loves the outdoors and hunting. He is currently training his labrador puppy, Simux, to hunt birds.
