Agency Creek Road wi Two culverts on Agency Creek that have been a fish passage problem are scheduled to be replaced late this summer. Starting the week of August 24 Agency Creek Road will be closed at mile post six for approximately two weeks. Following this project, another culvert at the start of the Upper West Fork Road of Agency Creek ( 500 Road) will also be replaced, and is also expected to take two weeks. During stream surveys conducted in summer of 1996 the Tribes Fish and Wildlife Department de termined that a series of culverts on Agency Creek were major barriers to fish passage. These stream surveys also showed that native cutthroat trout, various sculpins, Pacific lamprey, rainbow and steelhead trout, exist in these streams. The ability of the resident fish to move freely throughout the stream is very important to maintaining healthy fish populations. It is critically important to anadro mous fish like the Pacific lamprey and steelhead Tribe and Casino sponsor The Tribe and Spirit Mountain Casino have joined forces with Painted Sky, a non-profit group, to bring contemporary Native American bands to the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. The con cert, entitled "An Evening With Painted Sky" will be held Friday, September 11 in Portland. Ulali, a three-piece woman a Capella group, and Burning Sky, a quartet featuring Native flutes and drums, will headline the first ever Native American show at the Performing Arts Center. The show is presented by Painted Sky, whose mission is to es tablish an annual Native music festival in Portland. II close for two weeks trout because they live most of their adult lives in the ocean and must migrate to the cool headwaters of our streams to reproduce. It has become one the Fish and Wildlife Department's top priorities to remove these barriers. This year, the Fish and Wildlife Department ob tained grants from the Governor's Watershed En hancement Board and the USFWS through their Job In The Woods program to replace two existing oval culverts with two bottomless culverts. When completed, this project will open up another 7.5 miles of fish bearing streams. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we as sure you that this will increase fish habitat and im prove fish populations. Detour signs will be in place to guide you around the road closure and the Natural Resources Division office will have maps. You may call them to get the latest road closure report at 879-2382.
