Quicken computer class
The Tribe's Small Business Development Divi
sion is offering a Quicken software class to anyone
interested. Quicken software is designed like a
check register which allows you to track several
different accounts separately, such as business and
personal, checking, savings, credit cards, invest
ments and loans The class will be held on Tues
day and Thursday for two weeks, beginning on
Tuesday, September 22. Class location is the Busi
ness Lab at 28840 Salmon River Highway in Grand
Ronde.
Week 1: Basics of bookkeeping; basics of file
management; create files; assets; liabilities; appear
ance; navigating; and set preferences.
Week 2: Data entry; reconciliations; changes
and deletions; reports; tax transfer; general tax
rules; prepaids; cash drawer management; and new
year set up.

Willamina (6 miles). This
fund-raiser benefits the tri-
cities area (Grand Ronde, Willamina, and Sheri
dan) with a means to supply Christmas decorations
to all. three of the downtown areas.

WHAT: A series of classes designed to "dis
cover" tribal and local entrepreneurs and en
courage the development of your business idea
beyond "just an idea."
WHEN: Tuesday, September 15 and 22 from
5:30 to 8:30 p.m.,
WHAT: A ten-week series of classes designed
to guide participants through the business plan
writing process. The course materials and in
dividual counseling sessions allow participants
to work through the business planning process.
The end result is a comprehensive business plan
that can be taken to financial institutions for
loan consideration!
WHEN: The classes will be held on Tuesdays
from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning September
29 then every Tuesday thereafter for 10 weeks:
September 29; October 6, 13, 20, 27; Novem
ber 3, 10, 17, 24; and December 1. Gradua
tion will be held on December 4.
WHERE: Both classes will be held at the
Tribe's Small Business Development Center

Free class will address
parenting dilemmas
Authoritative Parenting is a FREE six-week class
for parents of adolescents, which is currently be
ing taught in schools, agencies, churches, juvenile
departments and Rotary Clubs throughout the coun
try. Now you have the opportunity to learn very
specific skills that will increase your confidence in
parenting. This class will show you how to deal
with running away, stealing, violence, lying, ar
guing, truancy, sexual activity, chore and home
work completion, choice of friends, driving issues,
gang involvement, sibling fighting, television time,
and the use of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.
Please join these FREE Authoritative Parenting
sessions which start Thursday, August 20 from 6
to 7:30 p.m. and will run for six weeks for a total
of 12 hours. Sessions will be held at the Academy
Building, third floor conference room B, in Dal

Landscape Design anyone?
The Education Division has been asked about the
possibility of conducting a Landscape Design class
in Grand Ronde. Currently the division is work
ing with Chemeketa Community College to possi
bly conduct an on-site class beginning mid-October.
The division would like to hear from you.
We need input regarding course content. Cur
rently, the class offered through the college is fo
cused toward home and residential landscaping.

Reading program offered
SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is an
early literacy program managed by the Oregon
Children's Foundation, a non-profit organization.
In the Fall, the SMART program will be launched
in the Willamina and Grand Ronde elementary
schools.
SMART will recruit and train 195 volunteers to
read for one hour each week with 195 kindergar
ten, first, and second graders in Yamhill County.
Statewide, SMART is already in 13 Oregon coun
ties providing 7,100 volunteers to read with the
same number of children. In addition, each stu
dent participating in the SMART program receives
two new books to take home each month. In Yam
hill County, approximately 3,000 new books will
be given to SMART students this upcoming school
year.
The mission of SMART is to enhance the read
ing skills, attitudes, and life prospects of children,
and to enable adult volunteers and communities to
experience the rewards of enriching young lives.
