This year, the Tribal Education Division's Annual Honor and Recognition
Dinner was held at the Grand Ronde Elementary School on Saturday, May
30. Over 200 people attended a new record. About 80 of the people in
attendance were recognized and awarded for their achievements as follows:
ACHIEVEMENT & RECOGNITION AWARDS Fifty-six students from
kindergarten through high school were present to receive their award. For
those not able to attend the event, their award was mailed to them.
8 GRADE GRADUATES Seven tribal member 8th grade graduates
were present and recognized at the event: Nick Bishop, Teresa Henry, David
Holmes, Serina Stake, Brad Leno, Nictoshia Sanchez, and Allison Empey.
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES Also present and recognized were
seven tribal member high school graduates: Ronaele Loomis, Andrew
Buxman, Ben Bishop, Joel Rock, Jeremy Haller, Brian Krehbiel, and Mason
Keppinger.
COLLEGE GRADUATES Two tribal member college graduates were
present and recognized: Shonn Leno, who earned an Associate's Degree of
General Studies from Clackamas Community College; and John Young, who
earned a Master's Degree in Education from City University in Belleview,
Washington.

1998-99 EDUCATION TRUST FUND SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Seven of this year's scholarship recipients were present to receive their
awards. Undergraduate Award: Camille Mercier, Debby Childers and Joel
Rock; Adult Vocational Training Award: Steve Druliner, Reynold Lane
and Theresa Thomas; Eula Petite Memorial Scholarship Award: Anne
Pichette; Raymond Carlton Memorial Scholarship Award: Joel Rock.
A SPECIAL NOTE OF THANKS FROM THE EDUCATION DIVISION:
We consider the Honor and Recognition Dinner as one of the
HIGHLIGHTS of our program's activities. It always turns out to be a
wonderful gathering of people a time of bringing families together and
a time to recognize the positive achievements of so many people. We expect
the event to grow each year as it has proven to do these past few years. We
feel fortunate that our biggest worry in holding this event is, "Will we have
enough room for all the people who wish to attend?" The reason the event
was held at the local elementary school is because we out-grew the
Community Center, and we almost filled the gym this year.
The Education staff would like to thank all the parents, grandparents,
family and friends who attended and showed support of such positive
achievements. Thanks to Sheila Herber and her crew who prepared a
delicious meal for us; and also thanks to the school custodian, Daryl Wright,
who orchestrated the setting up, taking down, and many other tasks. Special
thanks to Curtis Rentsch and the Tribal Maintenance Crew, especially to
Doug Colton and John Robertson. Thanks to Josh Holmes for helping too.
Thank you Craig Toll for doing a great job again this year on our invitations,
programs and certificates. Thank you Sharon Norwest, who did a great
job on the little graduation bears for the Twah Sunchako pre-school
graduates. Last and very importantly, we would like to once again thank
our Tribal Council for so generously supporting the Tribal Education Division
and all tribal members in their pursuit of educational endeavors.
