OIEA Youth Conference draws tribal teens m$m (!
Chinook Winds Convention Center in
Lincoln City hosted the Oregon Educa

American Indian youth on May 21, 22,
and 23. Teens from Oregon tribes at
tended the conference, and stayed at the
Shilo Inn, adjacent to Chinook Winds.
The conference covered a wide variety
of seminar topics including youth in
carceration, overcoming the loss of a
loved one, traditional values, and bas
ket making. Friday, OIEA held its
youth board meeting. Sixteen of our
Grand Ronde tribal teens attended.

Dear Editor,
On behalf of the family of Lester LaBonte, I
would like to extend our appreciation and thanks
to the numerous people who helped my dad dur
ing his lengthy illness. I would also like to thank
all of the people who extended their hand of friend
ship to me at the time of my dad's death. For the
people who took charge of the kitchen for us, pre
paring a beautiful meal; for the beautiful cards and
flowers sent; for the sharing of memories and for
the songs of honor of my dad thank you.
Respectfully,
Elaine LaBonte
Dear tribal members,
I want to take this opportunity to thank the fol
lowing people who helped me and my cousins,
Stephanie Duran (Grand Ronde Veterans' Jr. Prin
cess) and Ashley Tuomi (Jr. Miss Grand Ronde),
get to go to the Gathering of the Nations: my uncles
Tim Warren Construction and Randall King Con
struction; our cousins at Hanson Farms; my great
aunts Alta Bloomquist, Edith Cunningham, and
Betty Reed; my grandmother Evelyn Seidel; and
our cousin Charlotte Gray.
We had a great time there. We were warmly re
ceived by the committee and other Royalty Courts.
We were invited to a group photo session with all
visiting Royalty. Invitations were extended to at
tend some of their pow-wows. We went to the
Pueblo Cultural Center and listened to traditional
songs and watched Zuni and Hopi Dancers perform.
There were 3,000 dancers and drummers it is
something I will never forget. We met people from
all over the United States and Canada.
Thank you all again,
Courtney Warren
