8 Tribal Life Smoke Signals First qirl to win state champ in Greco wrestling AISES Scholarships D She will represent Oregon at NW Kids Regionals in Montana Congratulations to Grand Ronde tribal youth Summer Mercier for a fine year in the USA Wres tling Association and the State Championships. Summer is in her second year of wrestling. She is 9 years old and wrestles in the 50-pound bracket. Her overall record for the past two years is 50 wins and 8 loses. Although Summer is a girl, she com petes against mostly boys in all three styles of wres tling Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman. The following is some of her accomplishments for this year: Folkstyle 1st place Classic Qualifier (Newberg) 1st place Salem-Kiezer Open Tournament 1st place Sprague Crab Pool Open 1st place Banks Open Tournament 1st place TNT Open 4-man bracket (Tualatin) 2nd place Classic Tournament (OSU) 5th place Oregon State Championships Freestyle 1st place Cobra Challenge (Tualatin) 3rd place Oregon State Championships Greco-Roman 1st place Olympia Tune-up Challenge 1st place Oregon State Championships WAY TO GO SUMMER! Summer will be attending the Northwest Kids Re gional Championships in Butte, Montana on June 16-20, 1998. She will be representing the State of Oregon in Freestyle and Greco-Roman competi tion. Grand Ronde Veterans and members of the Grand Ronde Royalty and Veterans' Royalty were there, along with staff members and alumni. The application deadline is JUNE 15, 1998. Scholarship categories are: A.T. Anderson, EPA Tribal Lands, and Schuyler M. Meyer Jr. The A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship honors Anderson, a Mohawk and chemical engineer who founded AISES with six other American Indian sci entists. This scholarship is awarded to undergradu ate and graduate American Indian Alaskan Native stu dents pursuing academic degrees in science, engi neering, medicine, business, natural resources, and math and science secondary education. The EPA Tribal Lands Scholarship is awarded to college juniors, seniors and graduate students ma joring in the environmental sciences. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens. Summer employment at an EPA facility and or on an Indian reservation is also offered based on the availability of resources. The Schuyler M. Meyer Jr. Scholarship is avail able to full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are single parents with at least one minor child living in the same household. All fields of study are eligible and students must demonstrate finan cial need. In order to ensure your application will be considered, the Scholarship Department re quests that you be thorough and follow the check list on the back of the application.
