graduating this year, so that their name can be
placed in the program. We want to make sure all
graduates are included on our guest list. We would

Some students still have not provided a Winter
Term grade report and some of the students attend
a school that operates on the semester system so
they don't have a grade report at this time. Stu
dents who have not submitted a grade report please
do so at this time. Many of you still need to pro
vide a Spring Term schedule and a 1998-99 Fed
eral Financial Aid Report also.
Sponsorships to pay
summer camp fees
The Education Program has fifteen Summer Spon
sorships available for tribal youth in Kindergarten
through 12th grades. The maximum amount per
sponsorship is $200, which covers registration
costs only. The Summer Sponsorships is a pro
gram designed to help in the cost to attend summer
camps to promote success in school and life expe
riences. In order to apply please send the follow
ing: a letter from your child's school verifying he
she is enrolled in the current academic year; a per
sonal letter from the student stating why he or she
would like to attend camp and how it would en
hance their education; and information on camp
costtuition in the form of a brochure or registra
tion form.
Sponsorships will be awarded on a first come
first serve basis with the completion of the above

2224. Tribal youth invited
to attend conference
Oregon Indian Education Association will hold
its annual youth conference at Chinook Winds Con
vention Center in Lincoln City on May 21-23. The
conference will provide a variety of workshops and
activities. .
If your child or student is in 7th through 12th
grade and lives within the Six County Service Area,
please call Lisa Leno if heshe would like to attend
the conference. The Tribe will be providing trans
portation to and from Lincoln City from Grand
Ronde, chaperones, conference costs, and lodg
ing. Students attending Willamina Middle School
or Willamina High School the deadline to register
is May 1. Other students in 7-12 grade attending
other area schools have until May 6 to register.

Make your own drum
A drum making class will be offered to tribal
members (ages 16 and above) at the Commu
nity Center in Grand Ronde on Saturday, May
16 from 1 to 5 p.m. Please call 879-2282 to
register.

CPR; First Aid offered
Spirit Mountain Casino is offering com
munity members the opportunity to ac
quire certification in CPR and First Aid.
The next scheduled class will be held on
Tuesday, May 19 in the Molalla Room,
located at 28840 Salmon River Highway
in Grand Ronde. The CPR class is from
9 a.m. to noon., and the First Aid class
will follow from 1 to 5 p.m. If you are
interested in both classes the cost is $20.
However, you may take either class at $10
each per person, per class. You must pre
register by calling 879-3834. Payment
will be accepted the day of class or in ad
vance. Adult tribal members may obtain
a pre-arranged payment by contacting the
Education Division at 879-2275.
Elders visit Coos Bay
On March 12,
Grand Ronde Elders
attended an Elders
Honor Day hosted by
the Coquille Tribe,
Lower Umpqua Tribe
and Siuslaw Tribe.
Festivities included
lunch, bingo and a
giveaway held at the
Mill Casino in Coos
Bay.
Grand Ronde tribal Elder Florence Freelove, 93
(pictured), was crowned "Queen for the Day."
Dibbon Cook (Modoc-Klamath Tribe), 95, was
crowned "King for the Day."
That evening the Elders enjoyed dinner and a
pow-wow at the North Bend Community Center.
On Sunday, before leaving Coos Bay, the Elders
went to the Tribal Hall for breakfast. A total of 44
people went from Grand Ronde, including Elders,
spouses and drivers. Everyone had a wonderful
trip. Our Elders gave the hosts a beautiful wolf
picture as a gift of appreciation.
Elder passes away
Marshall Glen Parazoo, a tribal Elder, 75,
passed away on April 16 in Springfield, OR. Em
physema was the cause of his death.
He was bora on April 2, 1923 in Sutherlin, Or
egon to Henry and Ada Parazoo. Marshall mar
ried Carol Leeper on April 26, 1944.
Marshall worked in logging as a cat and yarder ,
operator with K & W Logging. His favorite hob
bies were fishing, hunting, camping and family get
togethers. He was a member of the Tribe, VFW
Springfield Post 3965, and the Masonic Lodge.
Marshall's military service included the U.S.
Army, WWII, and Staff Sgt.
Survived by his wife, Carol Parazoo of Spring
field; daughter, Glenda Davenport of Springfield;
sons, Dan Parazoo of Bend, OR. and John Parazoo
of McKenzie Bridge, OR.; five grandchildren; 3
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Pedersen
of Eugene, OR.
A memorial service was held on April 20 at
Springfield Memorial Gardens. Memorial contri
butions can be made to the Shriners. Hospital for
Children.
