Upcoming youth conference
Oregon Indian Education Association (OEM) will
hold its annual youth conference at Chinook Winds
Convention Center in Lincoln City on May 21-23.
The conference will provide a variety of workshops
and activities. If your child or student is in 7th
through 12th grade and lives within the Six County
Service Area, please call Lisa Leno if heshe would
like to attend, the conference. The Tribe will be
providing transportation to and from Lincoln City
from Grand Ronde, chaperones, conference costs,
and lodging. For more information, contact Lisa

Sponsorships to pay
summer camp fees
The Education Program has fifteen Summer Spon
sorships available for tribal youth in Kindergarten
through 12th grades. The maximum amount per
sponsorship is $200, which covers registration
costs only. The Summer Sponsorships is a pro
gram designed to help in the cost to attend summer
camps to promote success in school and life expe
riences. In order to apply please send the follow
ing: a letter from your child's school verifying he
she is enrolled in the current academic year; a per
sonal letter from the student stating why he or she
would like to attend camp and how it would en
hance their education; and information on camp
costtuition in the form of a brochure or registra
tion form.
Sponsorships will be awarded on a first come
first serve basis with the completion of the above

Leaders in Education to meet in Albuquerque
Conference to be held during Gathering of Nations
The National Coalition for Indian Education
(NCIE) and Tribal Education Contractor's Asso
ciation (TECA) issue their Call to Conference for
the 3rd Annual Joint Conference. The 1998 con
ference theme is "Models for Implementing Indian
America Goals." The conference is being held at
the Radisson Hotel in Albuquerque, NM on April
23-25, in conjunction with the Gathering of Na
tions Pow-wow.

The purpose of NCIETECA is to promote tribal
community education, support educational excel
lence, work with agencies and institutions to im
prove educational opportunities for Indian people,
network and exchange ideas, promote exemplary
educational models and keep informed of federal
legislation affecting tribal education.

Additional activities include casino tours, Pueblo
visits and the Gathering of Nations Pow-wow. .
Moccasin and drum making classes offered
HARD SOLE MOCCASIN: We are still taking
names if you want to sign up for Moccasin Mak
ing classes to be held in Salem and Portland. To
date, we do not have enough people signed up to
run a class in Salem. We also have a few spaces
left for the Portland classes. To be eligible to take
the classes, you must be a member of the Confed
erated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and at least 16 years
of age. Participants should plan to attend all classes.
These are fun classes that also teach and reinforce
a variety of skills which include culture, art, math,
science and history. For more information and

DRUM MAKING: The Adult Education pro
gram is taking registration for drum-making classes
in the Grand Ronde, Salem, and Eugene areas.
Tentative dates for the classes are targeted for late
April or May. The instructor is Clifford Latta. The
supplies are included for Grand Ronde tribal mem
bers ages 16 and older. Although on-site registra
tion may be possible, priority will be given to those
who have signed up. Proof of age and tribal iden
tity will be required for those who register on site.

Achievement and Recognition applications
have been sent to tribal students in high school
or younger, so please look for them in the mail
and send them back to the Education office so
that your outstanding student can be recognized
by the Tribe!
This program was established to identify and
recognize tribal youth who are enrolled and
attending school in Kindergarten through 12th
grade. The focus is to honor students for aca
demic, social and leadership accomplishments.
The Tribal Education Division and Tribal Coun
cil wish to acknowledge youth who make a spe
cial effort to excel in school, family andor com
munity activities. The Achievement and Rec
ognition Awards are monetary and applications
are available to all tribal member students.
The deadline to submit an
application is nay I, 1990.
The following items are required to be consid
ered for the award:
A completed application
Verification of Tribal Enrollment
Verification of school attendanceenroll
ment. (A letter from a school official or a copy
of a report card.)
Three letters of recommendation. Two of
the letters must be from a teacher, counselor
or principal at the school you attend. The other
letter could be from a tribal leader, tribal El
der, minister, group leader, family member,
or other persons who know about you and ac
tivities you participate in.
A personal essay from the you explaining
your achievements and accomplishments in the
past year. Include your educational goals and
career plans.
Achievement and Recognition Awards appli
cations are available at the Education office.

tion, or you stop by the Education office to pick
one up.

The Honor and Recognition Dinner will be
held on Saturday, May 30. The place and time
will be announced later. The dinner is for all
Achievement and Recognition recipients,
graduating students from preschool, 8th grade,
high school, GED, and Higher Education pro
grams. If you know of a student who will be
