Kathryn Harrison presented Hat field and his wife with eagle feath ers, which are symbols of warrior spirit and strength. The Tribe will hold the feathers which will be dis played in his honor. During the meal, Hatfield, who has retired, made several comments re garding the fellowship. "I have to take this occasion to thank Mark and Kathryn in recog nizing Susan Long. Her memory and I ) V A I a.Vv n. b y 1 i, presence is shared in any honor I have received," he said. And looking at Rep. Furse, Hatfield said, "I can think of no greater pleasure in my years in the Senate than working with Eliza beth Furse and the teamwork and friendship we have shared." Hatfield told a story about his child hood and growing up in Salem. He said that he had relatives in Grand Ronde and has fond memories of vis iting and playing with children from the Tribe, who taught him aspects of Native American culture. One of the longtime friendships includes tribal Elder Ivanetta Cook and her family. MARK O. HATFIELD Born: July 12, 1922 in Dallas, Oregon Veteran, World War II United States Navy B.A., Political Science, Willamette University, 1943 Master's Degree, Stanford University, 1948 Married Antoinette Kuzmanich, 1958 They have four children and three grandchildren. Mark Hatfield began his political career in the Oregon Legislature in 1950. He served two terms in the Oregon House of . Representatives and two years in the Oregon Senate. In 1956 he became the youngest Secretary of State in Oregon history at age 34. He was elected Gover nor of Oregon in 1958 and became the state's first two-term governor of the Twentieth Century when he was reelected in 1962. In 1966, Hatfield was elected to the United States Senate; and in August of 1993, he became the longest serving U.S. Senator from Oregon. He served on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resource; Committee on Rules and Administration; Committee on the Library; Joint Commit tee on Printing; and served as Chairman of the Committee on Appro priations. He never lost an election.
