February 1, 1998 Royalty Opportunities 11 Tribal girls have two Royalty options available i " 1 i " I i Last year the Grand Ronde Veterans' Color Guard asked for tribal girls to partici pats in a new "Veterans' Royalty" who would travel to different veterans' events, pow wows, and cultural gatherings that the Color Guard would also be attending. Now, in addition to Grand Ronde Royalty, girls may also apply to be involved in the Veterans' Royalty. The Veterans' Royalty &zo appears at the Grand Ronde pow-wow and other Grand Ronde tribal events. If you or someone you know is interested In par ticipating in a Roysity Court for the upcom ing year, now is the time to start thinking Grand Ronde Veterans' Royalty requirements All interested girls must be able to meet the follow ing guidelines in order to be eligible for the Veter ans' Royalty Court: Girls must be enrolled members of the Confed erated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. Participants should have never been married and have no children. All girls must be enrolled in and currently at tending a public or private school. They must have one year pow-wow experience. D They must have their own regalia, or be able to make their own regalia before the application dead- line. Participants must be willing and able to at- tend all Veterans' events, and be prepared to rep- Here are the rules and regulations for participat ing in the Grand Ronde Royalty Court: Participants must be an enrolled member of the Grand Ronde Tribe, enrolled in public or provide school (unless graduated or a Tiny Tot), and as of April 15, 1998 in one of the following age catego ries: Tiny Tot 0-6 years; Miss Grand Ronde 7-12 years; Jr. Miss Grand Ronde 13-15 years; Sr. Miss Grand Ronde 16-19 years. Participants must have their own regalia that is appropriate for all events. It is not the responsibil ity of the Pow-wow Committee, Royalty Commit tee, Tribal Council, or any other tribal program to provide these things for participants. There will be a list of scheduled events to attend. Part of the judging requirements will be to attend each event. Members of Royalty Court are not paid posi tions. The two chosen Queens will receive a pre set amount of travel money for attending required events. Fund-raisers are the responsibility of the Court and their parentssponsors to coordinate. The monies raised will help the participants with travel expenses. Royalty Court participants are expected by their conduct, to represent the Grand Ronde Tribe, their family, and themselves with integrity and gracious spirit at all times. This means that participants must show good judgement by not participating in any activities that could bring adverse publicity to them selves or the Tribe while a member of Royalty Court. Full dedication and preparation to repre sent the Tribe in a positive way is expected. Par ticipants must be single, childless, and never mar ried. All young women and girls participating must be drug and alcohol free. about it. Royalty Court is an excellent chance for young members to represent their Tribe with pride and dignity. It is an obligation which requires a lot of time and commitment, but it's also a tremendous honor. Girls cannot participate in both the Vet erans' Royalty and the Grand Ronde Roy alty, so please choose the Royalty Court you are most interested in. resent the Veterans and the Tribe. D Must have a parent or sponsor willing to par ticipate and attend activities with the girls andor provide transportation. D As of July 10, 1998 girls must be 9 to 13 years of age for Junior Queen; and 14 to 18 years of age for Senior Queen. D Entries must be received by Tuesday, March 3, 1998. A mandatory meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 at the Natural Re source Building. D Royalty Court participants and their parent sponsor must attend all required events (pow wows, parades, fund-raisers, organizational meet ings and others). Absences can be prearranged with the Royalty Committee Advisor. Three un excused absences will result in disqualification from Royalty Court. Please note that all participants re ceive 1 point for every event. Royalty Court par ticipants are expected to stay for the duration of the events. This includes helping setup for events such as meetings and parades, as well as dancing during Grand Entry and staying until the flags are retired unless pre-approved with the Royalty Ad visor. Participants are expected to speak in front of large groups of people. Royalty Court partici pants must be willing and able to dance. Remem ber: You are all part of a team and are expected to treat yourselves, running mates, and others with respect at all times. D Royalty Court participants will be judged at the Royalty Court Pageant during the Annual Pow wow in August, 1998. Participants will be judged on speech, attendance at required events, interview questions, and raffle ticket sales. Participants are required to make at least one article of their rega lia. D Participants must have a parentsponsor who will accompany them to required events and help co ordinate fund-raisers and related events. Any mis conduct will result in disqualification from the Roy alty Court. Look for information regarding the first Royalty Court meeting, which is mandatory for all who wish to participate.
