Indian law begins January 7 Oregon Governor's School seeks applicants
In collaboration with Oregon State University and the
Tribal Education Division, a Native American Law, Treaties
Interpretation and U.S. Relations, upper division (300-400)
level class will be offered on site during Winter Term 1 998,
(January through March). Class will be held on Wednesday
evenings starting January 7 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., for a 10
week period. Persons interested in signing up for this class
should call Hollie 800-422-0232, ext 2275. The class is open
to the public and tuition for this 3 credit hour class is $4 1 5 .
Text books are available at Jim's Trading Post in Grand Ronde.
Tribal members interested in enrolling in this class need to
complete a Short Term Training application.

Salem The Oregon's Governor's School (OGS) is cur
rently accepting applications from high school students
throughout Oregon for its seventh annual Summer Insti
tute. The theme for the 1 998 Institute is "Growing with Your
Community."
OGS is a two-part, yearlong program leadership and com
munity service training program for high school students.
The program begins with a three-week, residential Summer
Institute to be held next on June 21 -July 10, 1998 at
Willamette University in Salem. The Institute focuses on
skill building in the areas of critical thinking, communica
tion, negotiation, conflict management, team-building and
project development. Students also meet with key leaders
in the state, work on community service projects and par
ticipate in an outdoor wilderness and experience outdoor
field studies.
Following the Institute, students participate in a series of
follow-up training sessions and opportunities to work on
both individual and group service projects with other youth
to address the needs of their communities. This phase of
OGS is known as "Youth Initiatives" and takes place region
ally throughout the state.
"We seek youth who represent diverse ethnic, academic
and socioeconomic backgrounds from all corners of Or
egon," says Dr. Marilyn Johnston, executive director of OGS.
"We strongly encourage young people who are strongly
committed to making a positive difference in their communi
ties and who are interested in gaining 'state-of-the-art' lead
ership skills to apply."
To be eligible, students must be entering their sopho
more, junior or senior year in either a traditional high school
or an alternative education program in Fall 1 998. Sixty par
ticipants from across the state will be chosen to participate.

Mt. Hood National Forest offering summer jobs
SANDY, OR People seeking summer jobs with the Mt.
Hood National Forest will be asked to submit applications
directly to the Forest Service beginning December 1, 1997
through January 16, 1998.
The new application process will bypass Oregon State
Employment offices. Instead, applications for temporary
jobs during the 1998 field season should submit job packets
to: Mt. Hood National Forest Headquarters, 16400 Cham
pion Way, Sandy, OR 97055. Applications will be accepted
from December 1 through January 16 only. (Applications
must be postmarked by January 1 6.)
Copies of vacancy announcements and application forms
will be available at the State of Oregon Employment Office
in Hood River, The Dalles, and Gresham; at the State of
Washington Columbia Gorge Job Service Center in White
Salmon; and the Forest Service office in Sandy, Oregon. A
copy of the announcement may be viewed on the Internet
(http:www.usajobs.opm.gov) as well.
Job application packets must include:

signed resume (SF-1 7 1 is acceptable);
Legible college transcripts (if using education as meeting
qualification standards):

Each job position requires submission of a separate ap
