Gary became a full-time employee on August 21, and spends his days driving to and from the Casino, transporting guests from Wan dering Spirit RV Park, and other local ar eas for folks who do not have transporta tion or cannot drive. Many of the area's older folks appreciate this service, and come to the Casino to play or have a nice , meal with friends. Gary was born and raised in Grand Ronde, and now lives in Tillamook with his wife, who also works in the Casino as a Kcno Runner. In fact, Spirit Mountain jobs have become a family endeavor, be cause Gary's son Ron is also employed at the Casino. "For most of my life I drove a log truck," said Gary. "What I like about working for the Casino is all the different people I get to meet every day. In other jobs, you see the same folks all the time, but here, I meet new people from all over." But he also has the opportunity to see other tribal members, people he hasn't had a chance to visit with in a long time. Many friends and family members come to the Casino or work with Gary, and that has also had its rewards. "It's amazing what the Casino has done to this community," said Gary. "It has employed more people and given a better life to so many folks in this area." And because of the increasing demand for Casino transportation, Gary's route will be steadily increasing to accommodate the service needs of people in Grand Ronde's surrounding communities. He already makes pick-ups in Pacific City and Lincoln City. (See schedule, below.) And Gary is definitely a qualified shuttle driver. During his years as a log truck operator, he travelled more than three million miles and had an excellent safety record, something that means a lot in the logging industry. "This job is totally new to me though," he said. "It's kind of a risk, really, doing something new after so many years of the same thing. But life is full of risks." Gary and his wife Marlise have three children and five grandchildren. While many people his age are beginning to think about retirement, Gary has embarked on a brand new career.
