Letter to the Editor
To the Editor:
I am grateful to the past and present Tribal
Council for the programs they approve. My
alcoholism and drug abuse was tearing my
life and my children's lives apart. I totaled
my brother's pick-up after drinking, and was
arrested for DUII. I was confronted about
my drinking by my friend, George Gale, and
Tom Jones, a tribal social services staff mem
ber. I admitted I needed help, and the Tribe
placed me at NARA Treatment Center. I
was at NARA for two months. While I was
there, my heart was opened by the Creator
so I could enter recovery.
I learned the 1 2-Step program of A.A. and
was a participant of the Sweat Lodge. After
I left NARA, I was helped by the drug and
alcohol program as an out-patient partici
pant. I attended A.A. meetings and family
counseling. These programs helped raise
my self-esteem and contributed to my spiri
tual growth. I was able to share myself with
my wonderful children: Mario, Sol, and Sam
George.
Without the Tribal Council supporting our
programs, I would not be celebrating my 5th
sober birthday in October. I am truly grate
ful for all the help the Tribe offers. Thank
you George and Tom! A special thanks to
Carmen Mercier, Barbara Lake, Shawn Hos
tler, Janell Haller, Sonya Lopez, and Kathy
Olson. Bless our Council and staff!
Gratefully,
Margo Mercier
Tribal Employment Services
The Tribal Employment Services program is available to help tribal members get a job or
even get a better job. The wide variety of services include career counseling, job skills
assessment, career interest assessment, interviewing techniques, resume writing, and Internet
access for job listings, just to name a few. Tribal members, if you would like to take advan
tage of any one of these services, call Connie Holmes at 879-2672 or Sheila Elliott at 879-203 1
or l -800-422-0232. .
Tribal members: Name that Day Park!
The need to finalize a name for the day use park located on the north fork of Agency Creek
is upon us. The two alternatives for a name are: KLAHOWYA... a Chinook word meaning
"How are you," "Have a good day," or "Welcome;" and KUMTUX TYEE... another
Chinook phrase which means "Wisdom Chief." (Thanks to Claudette Parazoo for the
suggestions.)
The Natural Resources Division would like to have input on which of these two names
should be used for the park. Please call Kelly Doerksen (879-2382) or Katie Higgins
Wheeler (879-2396) to vote for one of these names. We need to decide on a name by the
beginning of November so please get your votes in by October 31. Thanks for the help!
