Regional Council appointed by Clinton visits Casino
Grand Ronde Veterans: proud of summer activities
The Grand Ronde Tribal Council and Spirit Mountain Casino hosted a very important dinner at
Legends on Thursday, July 10. Attendees were the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of the
President's Council on Sustainable Development. In short, appointed representatives chose to visit
one Tribally owned Casino Spirit Mountain Casino to learn everything possible about Casino
operations, economic development of the Grand Ronde Tribe, and contributions to the community.
The Tribe provided the Regional Council with a bus ride from Portland, a tour of the Casino, and a
first-class dining experience. The informational presentation included words from Chuck Galford,
Kathryn Harrison, and Francis Somday. Tribal children who attend Twah Sunchako Learning Center
sang two songs in Chinook Jargon, Ila Dowd also told a story in Chinook, and during dinner flutist
Bill Wilson played Native music.
The Pacific Northwest Regional Council, modeled after the composition of the national council, is
composed of approximately 30 regional leaders from business, environment, social service and gov
ernmental organizations. The Pacific Northwest Regional Council is the first to be formed and will be
a prototype for other regional councils.
The President's Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD) is a group of national leaders appointed
by President Clinton in 1992 to address the integrated social, economic and environmental issues facing
the nation and to develop recommendations for how the country can work toward sustainable develop
ment, or "... meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to future generations to meet
their own needs." After years of exploring development issues throughout the nation's communities,
the PCSD issued its report, Sustainable
America: A New Consensus for prosperity,
Opportunity and a Healthy Environment for
the Future. The PCSD is currently working
on the first phase of implementing its report's
recommendations.
The recommendations of the national
council emphasized the importance of com
munity driven processes and local engage
ment in sustainable development. The Pa
cific Northwest Regional Council was initi
ated to encourage implementation activities
that fulfill the PCSD's joint belief that "the
nation must strengthen its communities and
enhance their role in decisions about envi
ronment, equity, natural resources, and eco
nomic progress so that the individuals and
the institutions most affected can join with
others in the decision process."
The Pacific Northwest Regional Council
will build upon the recommendations con
tained in the Sustainable America report and
the expertise of regional community lead
ers to strengthen and expand initiatives that
promote sustainable development. The re
gional council is establishing an action-oriented
program that factors cooperation be
tween, as well as national level organiza
tions such the Conference of Mayors.
The four main goals of the regional coun
cil are to provide:

able development issues and concepts.
0 Awards and recognition to existing sus
ceptibility initiatives.
Projectsupporttoregionalorganizations
working on sustainable development.
0 Projects that implement the recommen
dations contained in Sustainable America.

President Clinton, enjoyed an international theme-style dinner at Spirit
Mountain Casino.
Veteran's had great weather for their annual Pow
wow held on Saturday, June 1 2 at the Grand Ronde
Pow-wow Grounds.

The Veteran's Royalty Float won first place at the
Coburg Parade on Saturday, July 19.
