Many teen smokers face early health problems More than five million of today's American children face premature death from smoking-related diseases if current trends continue federal health officials have said. The Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) pre dicted that of the 68.7 million children under 1 8 in the United States, 16.6 million would become smokers. The agency said its estimate was conservative and did not reflect an in crease in teenage smoking that began in 1992. Over a third of high school students in America smoke, and that rate is going up. Smoking-related deaths could result in about $200 billion in future health care costs, and approximately 64 million years of potential life lost, the CDC predicted. Almost 82 of smokers in America started be fore age 18. Smokers die an average of 12 years earlier than non-smokers. The government says that the tobacco use among young people has increased greatly over the past few years. Be tween 199 1 and 1995 the percentage of eighth and tenth grad ers who smoked significantly increased 34. In 1995, more than a third of twelfth graders said they had smoked in the past month and daily smoking in that group was up 21. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed stricter regulation of the sale and distribution of cigarettes to chil dren, including banning free samples and most vending machines and requiring photo identification to anyone un der 27 purchasing tobacco products.
