May is National Blood Pressure Month
Hypertension and Heart Disease
D Understanding Blood Pressure.
Blood pressure is the force of your
blood pushing against the walls of
your blood vessels. When you have
your blood pressure checked, you'll
notice that the measurement is given
as two separate numbers, 1 1070, for
example. The top number refers to the
pressure in your arteries when your
heart is pumping (systolic pressure).
The lower number refers to the pres
sure in your arteries when your heart
is resting (diastolic). Blood pressure changes throughout the day, depending on your ac
tivity, stress level, and other factors. High blood pressure is usually defined as blood
pressure greater that 14090 that fails to come down regardless of activity,
n A Problem Without Symptoms. High blood pressure has virtually no noticeable
side affects in its early stage. That is why everyone should have their blood pressure
checked annually, (if results are normal) or every month (if blood pressure is running
high). Sadly, all too often the first "sign" of hypertension is a heart attack, stroke, or
kidney problem.
