Keno department promotes
Michelle Kelley

Working in the Keno department of Spirit
Mountain Casino can be fun and exhaust
ing, both at the same time. Michelle Kelley
knows, because she has recently been pro
moted from Keno Runner to Keno Writer.
Keno Runner means exactly that run
ning around the Casino taking tickets from
guests who might be doing other things like
eating or playing the machines. Keno Run
ners have to be pretty alert they have to
be aware of who is playing, and who has '
winning tickets. Even though it might
sound easy enough, Michelle's job has been
keeping her on her toes. And Keno run
ning is how it all began for Michelle.
"I started working for the Casino in 1995,
right after it opened," she said. "I worked
swing shift, but now I have the day shift."
Since her promotion last month from
Runner to Writer, Michelle doesn't have to
run around the Casino too much anymore.
Her job is to enter the completed ticket num
bers into the computer, pay the winners, and
replay tickets if necessary.
Keno is a computerized number game
that pays out according to the type of game
a player selects and how long the odds are
of the computer picking all the numbers on
a certain ticket. It is similar to state lotter
ies and Powerball. Michelle has paid out
thousands of dollars to Keno players at the
Casino. Michelle said she is very happy
with her promotion, and is doing exactly .

what she had in mind for herself when she
first came to work for the Casino.
"In the beginning, I had a goal for my
self," she said. "My goal was to be pro
moted to Keno Writer, and now I have
achieved that." The next step in moving up
in her job would be a promotion to Lead
Person, who supervises an entire shift, but
Michelle said she is very happy with what
she has accomplished so far. "I like the
people I work with," she said. "And I like
the players."
Michelle is the daughter of Claudia and
Merle Leno and she grew up in Grand
Ronde. (Her sister, Emma is Junior Miss
Grand Ronde this year.) She has two sons
who are also enrolled.
Returning to Spirit Mountain for
another amazing performance,
a capella group "TheTrenchcoats"
pleased the crowd as the opening act
for country starTrisha Yearwood.
Trisha gave a down to earth perfor
mance and talked to the audience
between singing her favorite songs.
