CASINO EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Toby McClary shines at Legends
Toby McClary has
been working at Legends
ever since it opened last
summer, and has already
been promoted a couple
of times. The eighteen
year old tribal member
started out as a dish
washer, moved into
kitchen prep work, and
now he's been made a
Pantry Steward by his su
pervisor, Greg Taylor.
Toby has lived in Grand Ronde since the
third grade ever since his mom, Joann
Merrier, moved back home after living in
Springfield. Now, Joann, Toby, and his
brother, Travis all work at Spirit Mountain
Casino. As a full-time employee at Leg
ends, Toby is responsible for keeping ev
erything in stock in the kitchen all the
dry goods, produce, dairy, and meat prod
ucts as well as the cleaning supplies.
"Everyday, when my shift begins I check
the Par Book," said Toby. "I look in the
book to see what is needed for the day, then
I order it from Shipping and Receiving."
Making sure the kitchen is up to "par" is
part of what makes the restaurant run so
smoothly. For example, if the Par Book says
that the kitchen needs to have ten bags of
potatoes at all times, Toby looks to see how
many are stocked, and orders the needed

amount. This must be
done every couple of
hours.
Because all the orders
to Shipping and Receiv
ing are done by computer
sheet, Toby has learned a
lot about data entry. "I
wanted this job to learn
about computers, and
how they work," he said.
"I never took any com
puter classes in high
school, so I thought I'd better learn."
After everything has been ordered, Toby
spends part of his shift putting items away,
and helping prep cooks out by preparing for
dinner. His shift begins at noon, and ends
at 8 p.m.
"When it slows down, around four or five
o'clock, I help cut and cook vegetables,
bake bread, or whatever needs to be done
for dinner," Toby said. "Then at about
seven, I'll run through the Par Book again
for the next day." Toby said that the best
parts of his job are the people he works with
and the benefits the Casino offers. Also,
restaurant work makes time go by fast, es
pecially when it's busy.
"I think the kitchen staff has the best
record for employee turnover," said Toby.
"Everyone I work with has been there for a
while. We have a lot of fun back there."

Tribal member Kathcrinc Russell wishes
to thank all of the "macho, good-looking
angels" from the Clinic construction crew
who came to her rescue when she was stuck
in the mud behind the tribal offices. They
all got muddy while giving her van a push
and she is very grateful for their help.
