Tribal teen sets his own goals Seventeen year old JEREMY HALLER knows the meaning of responsibility. He has spent the past two years proving that to his parents and his teachers at Willamina High School. As captain of Willamina's football team and active participant in school activities, Jeremy was a Sheridan Sun Athlete of the Week last fall after a superior game against Taft. He plays guard and tackle for the team. His participation in sports hasn't de tracted from his school work, either. Jer emy maintains a 3.4 GPA, and was listed in the 1996 Who 's Who Among American High School Students almanac. So when he decided to get a part-time job in order to earn money to buy himself a truck, his parents were all for it. He worked at Fort Hill Texaco gas sta tion for ten months, and finally saved enough for a down payment on a truck, which he refers to as "my baby." He is currently employed at the Ca sino as a Dish Machine Operator, and works in the afternoons and on week ends to earn enough for that truck pay ment. "This summer, I'll go full-time at the Casino," he said. Jeremy said he usu ally gives most of his paycheck to his parents, who helped him get financing for his truck, and plans to have it paid for by the time he enters college in 1998. "I also pay my own gas and insur ance," said Jeremy. He and his dad work together on it when it needs main tenance. Jeremy did take some of his earn ings and bought a satellite system so he could watch all the sports channels, and said that if he had his way, it would be tuned in to ESPN ninety percent of the time. In fact, Jeremy loves sports so much, he plans on making a career out of it. "I have been thinking about sports medi cine," he said. "There are good schools in Oregon for that program. Whatever I de cide I know I'll work in the sports profes sion though." The Hallers are a very close family, and Jeremy's grandparents, Pete and Val Grout, encourage leadership qualities in all their grandchildren. There is no doubt that Jeremy's parents, Timothy and Janell Haller, are comfortable will all of the com mitments he has, as well. With all of his obligations school, sports, work, family Jeremy has never let down the people who count on him. He's just a natural born leader who sets an example for all of us. ! .1 1 : : ' 4 "": :.;) i - i. http : www. macnet. comhomectgremooreHPageSBD. html 7 A A A , v Penny DeLoe: new job in contract health ; u y "-v y " I "' '''' " " v' 'til i Tribal member Penny DeLoe is the new Contract Health Specialist for the Tribe.
