December 2, 1996 SMOKE SIGNALS 6 Students visit OSU campus By Marion Mercicr On November 7, 1996 ten local Tribal High School students attended the annual Native American Student Visitation Day at Oregon State University. The students were Joe Mercier, Brandy Leno, Ben Bishop, Jason Greenlaw, Sol George, Rachel Towner, Tara Leno, Dustin Billings, Erica Mercier and Brian Krehbiel. We all enjoyed lunch provided by the OSU Native American club members and then vvc were given a tour of the campus facilities and programs. I really appreciated the behavior the students displayed throughout the days activities. They represented our Tribe very well. Some of the comments expressed by the students were: Joe: "I learned a lot about the way they help Native Americans in college. 1 would like to go visit more colleges." Brian: "It was interesting to learn about EOP and how it helps all minorities and how they talk well and are well educated." Other comments: "I liked all the people being courteous and kind. They made me feel welcome." And of course many of the favorable comments were about hav ing free food! The college visitations provide the students insight to what it could be like to go to college and also the time gives us the opportunity to reinforce the idea that attending col lege is a real choice that they have and to let them know that funding and support programs 7 "3uf J '"'Nil I f .."v 4: " - :. mm i I " x 11 .fw- L 1 OnT I m UJ r; are available to all of them. I would like to personally commend this particular group students also because the visitation day was scheduled on a day that school wasn't session, so they gave up a vacation day to attend.
