Benefit Fund; Legal Service topics of meeting

The October General Meeting was held
on Sunday, October 13. (The October
meeting is always held on the second Sun
day, due to the opening of hunting season.)
A full Council was present with Kathryn
Harrison chairing her first General meet
ing as the newly elected Chairperson.
TRIBAL MEMBER
BENEFIT UPDATE
A presentation was given by Francis
Somday, Executive Officer; Pat Mercier,
Financial Officer, Greg Archuleta, Admin
istrative Officer; and Chris Leno, Execu
tive Assistant. The Benefit Fund is divided
into two categories:
1. Members Benefit Fund for adults
over 2 1 years old. Withdrawal requests will
be issued on the 10th day of the month fol
lowing the request.
2. Minors Trust Fund is available for
members under 21 years of age. This fund
is divided into three different portfolios for
financial gain ages 0 to 10; ages 1 1 to
16;andagesl7to21. After a member turns
21 years old, their money is transferred from
Minors Trust Fund to the Members Benefit
Fund. Tranfers occur on the 1st day of the
second month of each calendar quarter
(February 1, May 1, August 1, and Novem
ber 1). After the money is transferred, with
drawal requests will be issued on the 10th
day of the month following the request.
To be eligible for either fund (Members
Benefit or Minors Trust): you must des
ignate a beneficiary on the application form
within one year or the money will go back
into the Fund. Also on the application form
you are requested to supply a reason that
you would like to withdraw your money.
This is to help administration determine if
enough members are using the Tribal Pro
grams to full capacity education, hous
ing, medical, etc.
Here are some facts and statistics accu
mulated from the September 25, 1996 dis
tribution. 1377 enrolled tribal members under 21.
2038 enrolled tribal members over 21.
3415 total enrolled tribal members.
5 1 of enrolled population requested full
withdrawal.
7 of enrolled population requested par
tial withdrawal.
42 of enrolled population requested no
withdrawal at this time.

GRAND RONDE
LEGAL SERVICES
On May 1, Tribal Council contracted for
one year a service for all tribal members to
use for legal representation. At this Gen
eral meeting Gaylc Patterson, an attorney
with Oregon Legal Services (OLS) shared
information on provided services. "Since
May, 140 tribal members have used this le
gal service. Most of these clients have had
these issues and problems for seven to ten
years," Gayle indicated. "They have just
lived with these difficulties. Some arc scri
