Dear Tribal Member Artists;
The Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde is beginning construction of its
Health and Wellness building. The
facility is scheduled for completion,
July 1997. We, the tribal Health and
Human Services (HHS) Committee are
working on gracing our facility with fine art work. We
believe that our own tribal members are gifted artists and
we are extending this opportunity to you to show your work.
The HHS Committee has developed a budget for pur
chasing tribal member art work. We cordially invite you
to submit a portfolio of a sampling of your art work so that
selections can be made. While we would love to view your
art work first hand, we do not want to have it damaged by
mail or mishandling; therefore, we are asking that you send
a portfolio of your art which includes photographs and a
brief description of each piece. The art work can be made
from textiles, leather, metals, etc., which would include
carvings, paintings, sculptures, beadwork, photography,
basketry, pottery, etc. The theme of the art should depict
our northwest and coastal culture and heritage. Please in
clude a price for each article.

Band instruments wanted
Grand Ronde Elementary School is in need of band in
struments for the 4th5th grade band program. Only a few
instruments are available for a modest rent through the
school district, so most of the students are required to rent
instruments from a music store. This can be too much of
an expense for many students and keeps them from partici
pating in the band.
Do you have any used instruments you would be willing
to donate to the school? The instruments could be placed
in a rental program but at such a modest price that all stu
dents could afford to rent them. The money collected from
rentals would be used to purchase more used instruments.
Most needed instruments are youth sized flutes, clarinets,
trombones, coronets, and trumpets. The school would show
their appreciation by advertising who donated which in
struments to the school. The students would show their
appreciation by working hard to learn to play the instru
ment to the best of his or her ability.
To donate a band instrument, please contact the school
at (503) 879-5210.
Share your lunch hour with a child
"Lunch Buddies" is a program linking community vol
unteers with elementary school children in need of a posi
tive adult friendship. Volunteers will be asked to spend
just one lunch hour a week with a child at the Grand Ronde
Elementary School. The time will be spent eating, talking,
perhaps reading or shooting baskets, but most importantly
listening to and taking an interest in that one special indi
vidual child.
"With a low investment of time, this program has already
yielded high impact results in Corvallis and Salem," said
Connie Hyatt, Director of the Polk County Volunteer Pro
gram. For more program information please contact Nancy
Holmes at 879-2401. It's a wonderful way to make our
, community grow strong and happy, one child at a time.
