September 7, 1996 SMOKE SIGNALS 9 Third security guard training to be offered In partnership with Chemeketa and Clackamas Community Colleges, the Tribal Education Division will offer a second Se curity Officer Training Academy to begin October 1. Participants will receive cer tificates of completion for the LE-4502 Se curity Officer Academy, as well as certifi cation in: First Aid and CPR training, ASP Baton Weaponry, Chemical Spray Weap onry, and Fire Arms Safety. Students who complete the program will earn six college credit hours. The training program will cover a pe riod of ten weeks. Class location is in Sa lem, at Chemeketa Community College, Building 3, Room 118. The class is lim ited to 35 participants. Training tuition is $567 per student. Tribal members will have tuition provided by the Education Division. Non-tribal members must provide an initial payment of $250 at the beginning of the training, and must sign a payment agreement. Students who are agency sponsored through JTPA, Mid-Willamette Valley Jobs Council, Vocational Rehabilitation, Good will Industries, etc., must have the agency contact the Tribal Education office prior to the conclusion of the first week of train ing. Fall Classes at Education Center announced The Education Division and Chemeketa Community College will offer classes beginning September 23. Adult Education has plenty to offer The Adult Education Program now in cludes the following services: 1. Fee coverage for bus passes to ABE GED classes. (Please submit proof of at tendance and fares.) 2. Tuition and books for one skill en hancement class per term. These are classes which will improve your job skills, job performance, or offer personal devel opment opportunities such as a beginning computer class. They also include classes which will improve math or writing skills. Call and ask if you have a need which you think falls into these categories. 3. Senior Citizen's Classes: Many ar eas offer classes for senior citizens at spe cial rates. Our programs can cover the fees for these classes. We are also hoping to offer some classes locally. 4. Classes which offer culturally rel evant activities and information. This is an area we are in the process of develop ing and we would love to have your in put. More information will be coming in the next month. 5. GED Tuition assistance, counselling, planning, and local classes. Our goal is to keep improving services. The Adult Education Coordinator is planning to be in Portland and Eugene in September. She is also available to visit other areas in the state at the request of tribal members. GED Classes offered in Grand Ronde JoAnn Leathers will be instructing com munity GED classes in Grand Ronde this fall. They will begin September 24, and will be held at the Education Classroom on Highway 22. Classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday, from 4-7 p.m. Pretesting for the GED and all instruction is free! The Chemeketa Construction Skills Training Program can help you. In 22 weeks, you'll learn technical background and gain the hands-on experience employ ers in all facets of construction are seeking. You'll earn 33 college credits and be awarded a certificate of completion once you have finished the program. The program consists of two 11 -week coursed that are offered in sequence. Both are held weekdays at the Chemeketa construction training facility. . Fundamentals of Construction, (CTX050) is an orientation to construction methods, standards, and safety practices. Applied Construction Principles, (CTX060) places an emphasis on residen tialcommercial construction and lets you put your skills to work on actual projects. Classes begin September 23. SBD posts classes for this month YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS IDEA This class focuses on helping anone who is thinking of going into business. One day class. Tuition: $ 1 0, which applies toward the Starting a Successful Business class if you choose to continue. STARTING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS Meets weekly for 1 0 weeks. Tuition: $ 1 00 (5 college credits available). SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Meets monthly for 1 2 months. Tuition: $ 1 00 (6 college credits available). INFANT SUPPLEMENTAL CARE: Applications for assistance in the amount of $50 per month may be obtained from the Youth Education Department for children meeting the following requirements: 1. ParentGuardian is either working, attending school or in a training program. 2. Household income meets current guidelines. 3. ALL members of the household must verify income with a copy of the following: Current pay stubs for a full month, andor Social Security award letter; Veterans Administration statements; General Assistance; AFDCADC pay stubs; all other income sources. 4. Children must be enrolled in the Grand Ronde Tribe or be able to show proof of eligibility. 5. Caregiver must register with the Youth Education Department. We will be able to provide assistance for 12 children -payments to begin October 1, 1996 and will continue for one year. TEEN PARENT ASSISTANCE: $100 per month for supplemental care to the first 4 applicants who demonstrate greatest need, meeting all the above requirements. TWAH SUNCHAKO LEARNING CENTER: We are accepting applications for the term to begin September 3 . Full day is $200 per month. Morning is $100 per month. PRE-SCHOOL WRAP AROUND: Pre school enrolled children who wish to stay for the afternoons are offered a well-staffed care program. It is open on all pre-school days from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. TANOOS TUMTUM: Before and After School Care will begin September 16. Applications are being accepted for this year. The center is located at Grand Ronde School. Price for full time is $75; afternoons is $50 per month. TUTORING SERVICES: Our department services eight schools in our area. A tutor will be at each school Vi day per week. NATIVE AMERICAN CLUBS Dates for sign up for this year will be placed at the school offices one week after the beginning of the school year. SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Youth Education will offer basic school supplies to children with need in our service district at the beginning of the school year. GUIDED STUDY HALLS: We offer a guided study hall at Grand Ronde Elementary and Willamina Elementary one day per week for students. Parents are required to sign their child up for this service and provide transportation home. The study hall is for one hour after school.
