Freshman makes varsity

Congratulations to tribal member Billy
DeLoc, who was awarded Athlete of the
Month at his school for baseball. Billy is a
Freshman at Neah-Kah-nie High School in
Rockaway, and he made the varsity team
this year, which is rare for a Freshman.
Your family is proud of you!
Baby announcement
Thomas Murphy Schmitt was born on
Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 a.m., to Patti and
Steve Schmitt. Patti is the daughter of Gary
and Polly Lewis, and granddaughter of
Norma Lewis.
Everyone in the family is happy to hear
about the birth of their newest tribal mem
ber. Congratulations to the whole family!
Tribal member announces
daughter's engagement
Patti Hoopingarner proudly announces the
engagement of her daughter, Yvonne
Hoopingarner to Charles A. Chapin. The
wedding date is scheduled for June 15, 1996.
A special evening dinner will be
held for tribal elders and one guest.
Thursday, April 25
from 5 to 8 p.m.
There will be entertainment and we
will be taking a group picture.

Yakama tribal elder passes away
Margaret H. Vivette, of rural White Swan, Washington died
on March 11. She was 84 years old.
Margaret was born April 23, 1 9 1 1 in Wapato, where she was
raised. She then attended and graduated from Chemawa In
dian School in Salem.
She married Leonard Vivette on October 4, 1935. Margaret
received her Licensed Practical Nurse degree from Yakima
Community College, and was employed at Saint Elizabeth
Hospital for 2 1 years before retiring. She was a member of the
Yakama Indian Nation, Saint Mary's Catholic Church of White
Swan, Harrah American Legion Auxiliary, and she was a Gold
Star Mother.
Her hobbies were going to the beach, clam digging, the moun
tains, picking berries, gardening, cooking and canning. She
won may ribbons for her entries in the Central Washington
State Fair and the Harrah Sugar Beet Festival. Margaret was
also an avid sports fan.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Vivette of White
Swan; one son, Charles Vivette of Wapato; daughters Yvonne
Smith of Wapato, Leonette Galligher of Beaverton, Floriene
Hoff of Portland, and Emalene Vivette of Wapato; nineteen
grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene
Wilbur of Anacortes.
Margaret was preceded in death by a daughter, Collette; a
son, Leon; a grandson, Scott Galligher; two infant granddaugh
ters; seven sisters; and five brothers.
The following grandchildren are enrolled members of the
Grand Ronde Tribe: Tammy Cook, Courtney Galligher, Patrick
Galligher, Colette Abdie, Mitchell Hoff, Renee Gordon,
Nicole Hoff, Malissa Vivette, Meghan Vivette, Jessica Vivette,
and William Vivette.
Great-grandchildren are: Taylor Abdie, Cole Abdie, Ian
Smith, Andrew Smith, Jennifer Smith, Kayla Smith, Tyanna
Smith, Amanda Smith, Sophia Smith, and Carolyn Smith.
Margaret's daughter Leonette Galligher is also a Grand
Ronde tribal member, as is her father, Leonard Vivette.
The family of Margaret Vivette wishes to thank the Tribe
for the flowers sent to her during her illness and at the time of
her funeral. A special thank you to Kathryn Harrison and
Jackie Whisler for their kindness.
Tribal youth attend basketball tournament
The Wolf Pack, a tribal after school club, meets on Tuesday and Thursdays to play basketball. On March 22 and 23 the team participated
in the 1 st annual Siletz Co-Ed Basketball Tournament for tribal youth ages 8-17. The Grand Ronde Team placed fourth, it was a good team
experience for everyone involved. The team members are Emma Leno, Brittany Thomas, Amanda Thomas, Brandy Little, Wendy Mer
rier, Daniel Garrison, Jack Provost, Nick Kimsey, Tim Ham, and Lee Wilson. Coaches are Duane ManyHides and Vernon Kennedy.
Assistant coach was Samson George.
