Page 8 March 15, 1996 - SMOKE SIGNALS i tfeogg Small Business Development program report At the March Genera Meeting, Elaine Moore and Sam Henny gave a presentation of 1995 services and new activities for 1996 for Small Business Development (SBD) division. 1995 Services They included business counseling, computer lab, computer training classes, business classes, and BIC (Business Information Center). B1995 Location of Clients 27 Grand Ronde, Willamina, Sheridan; 43 Six County Area; 19 Remaining Oregon; and 11 Other States SBD will work with any tribal member. 13 New Business Startups in 1995 Most new businesses were in Salem and Portland. 1996 Activities Business Counseling Counseling services include financial; loans; business plans; tax preparation; maintaining books; and marketing, which includes adver tising brochures and business cards. Computer Lab The lab is open to everyone, Monday through Friday, during regular business hours. Computer Training Classes Classes are FREE to tribal members. Offered courses are: Beginning and Intermediate Excel, Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Windows, Graphic pro grams, etc. The staff offers individual help and will work with your schedule if you can not make it to the scheduled classes. Business Classes You may receive 5 credits from NW Indian College. These classes are very good to take before starting your own business. They de tail all the considerations and the procedures in applying for loans. This service also makes you available to ONABEN counselors. BIC The Business Information Center is located at the SBD office. The staff encourages people to make use of this library, which con sists of business books and videos that can be checked out. ONABEN Classes If a tribal member completes this program, they will be reimbursed the $100 tuition fee. Tax Preparation Assistance Please call for an appointment. Staff will as sist you in preparing your returns free of charge to tribal members. Business Opportunities Fair This fair will offer information on how to start a franchise, like McDonalds and other chains. Youth Programs Offered through the schools. Children's Art Show Available to tribal children and young adults up to age 24. Art will be made into post cards, calendars, banners, and utilized as in terior decor for the new health clinic. Proposed 1996 activities Art Gallery A gallery for home based craftspeople. People who do "a little" beading or "a little" painting don't really consider themselves art ists, but they are. SBD needs those people. Let Sam know and she will put them on the mailing list to keep craftspeople updated. Marketplace The Marketplace concept is in the idea stage. It may be organized like Saturday Market in Portland. Native American Chamber of Commerce Applications still needed.
