COUNCIL HONORED V. MARIE SCHMIDT Marie was honored for her involvement and support of education. Since retiring, she has been on the Educa tion Committee since the very beginning, and tribal rep resentative for the statewide OEIA. Before retiring, she worked 36 years for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Marie also serves on the board of Ecumenical Minis tries of Oregon. She has also recently been honored at ATNIatKah-Nee-Ta. OREGON LEGAL SERVICES PROPOSAL Michael Mason, tribal attorney, introduced Ira Zirov who proposed a "Grand Ronde Tribal Legal Service Plan" with Oregon Legal Services (OLS). The l-year proposed service for $98,000 would be a prepaid legal service for tribal members. OLS has 14 offices through out the state capable of serving tribal members. The types of cases handled by OLS are civil cases and would include: Family Law (custody, divorce, adoption); Housing (landlord issues); Consumer (harass ment by bill collectors or having troubles with a car you just bought); Schools (discipline issues); Public Ben efits (unemployment and social security); Seniors; and Discrimination. Proposal includes: A Toll-free number available for tribal members to make appointments and get advice, an Education program on knowing your rights on do mestic relations, consumer issues, housing, etc., an Al ternative dispute program which can entail using a me diator to solve problems, before going to court, and Re ferral services, in cases of personal injury or criminal cases. This program is still being considered by Tribal Council, who will decide if the Tribe would like to pro ceed with the proposal. DEMOCRAT REPRESENTATIVE Valeric Payne, w ho is running for State Senate, Sec ond District, would like tribal support and signatures to get her on the election ballot. Money donated will sponsor an activity of their choice. tribal government office. CEMETERY IMPROVEMENTS The Tribal Council has recently targeted some improvements for the Tribal Cemetery. The Elders recently sent the Council a re quest that supports the desired cemetery improvements and further requests that the improvements provide belter access to the cem etery.
