He has received national recognition as the person respon sible for the graphite drawing from which Rip Caswell sculpted the bronze statue of Martha Jane Sands and Gertrude Mercier at Spirit Mountain Casino; in 1994 he won first prize in a contest in Artists' Magazine for an egg tempera painting entitled "Night Ride," and most recently, his work ap peared on the cover of Indian Gaming magazine. "At this point, I am not doing pencil drawings," said Lon, who resides in Port land. "I'm doing egg tempera and water color." Lon has taken an extended leave of ab sence from his job as a fifth grade teacher in the Portland Public School system to fo cus on his painting, and develop his busi ness, Mercier Fine Art. He has had paint ings on display in local galleries, and at tends many Pacific Northwest art shows each year. Last month he attended a west ern art show in Spokane. Lon said the art shows he attends are a good way to sell some original paintings, as well as prints. Many of the shows are attended by serious art collectors. "People in the Northwest seem to want landscapes, floral, western, or regional designs," he said. Lon's landscape paintings are often the result of a photo he has taken and calls them "Willamette Valley imagery." He said he could attend as many as twelve shows this year, the biggest one being the Pac Rim Art Show in Seattle. Lon said to receive a display area at an art show, most participants have to be selected, then invited to attend. "The panel decides whose work fits the theme of the show," he said. In January, Lon began doing commissioned portraits, in which he will do custom paintings for private parties. He is currently working on a watercolor of a friend's children. He offers clients choice of media and size, and works with the clients to ensure total satisfaction. If you are interested in commissioning a quality painting for you or a family member, contact Lon at Mercier Fine Art, 1460 SW 66th, Portland, Oregon 97225. PhoneFax: (503) 297-4 158. I!
