T Tappy New Year! 1995 was a busy year for the Roy
jfjfalty Court and Committee. We've had an excellent
year of representation of the past years' Royalty Court.
As 1996 gets underway its time to think about participat
ing in this years Royalty Court. If you are a young lady, or
know someone, who is a Grand Ronde tribal member and
would like to represent her Tribe with pride and dignity,
please look over the required rules and guidelines. If you
want to be a part of this year's Court fill out the application
form and send it to Camille Mercier at the address listed.
Please realize that being a part of the Royalty Court takes
a considerable amount of time commitment and dedication,
however it is an honor to represent your Tribe in the capac
ity of a princess of the Court.
There will be a mandatory meeting the last week of April
for those who apply to the Royalty Court, so please have
your applications mailed in by April 15. (The sooner, the
better for processing.) You may call Camille Mercier after
March 15 at (503) 879-2901 if you have any questions or
concerns.
D oyalty Committee is also considering applications for
jfvcommittee positions at this time. Royalty Committee
is a volunteer commitment and are not paid positions. Please
call Camille Mercier for more information or the main
switch board at 879-52 1 1 to find out how to receive a com
mittee application.
Participants must be an enrolled member of the Confederated
Tribes of Grand Ronde. Participants must be enrolled in public
or private school and in one of the following age categories: Tiny
Tot 0 to 5 years; Honorary Court 6 to 1 0 years; Jr. Miss
1 1 to 14 years; Sr. Miss 15 to 19 years.
Participants must have their own regalia that is appropriate for
all events. It is not the responsibility of the Pow-Wow Commit
tee, Royalty Committee, Tribal Council, or any other program to
provide these things for any reason for you. There will be a list of
scheduled events for participants to attend. A part of the judging
requirements will be to attend each event.
Royalty Court has no paid positions. The two Queens will re
ceive a preset amount of travel money for attending required
events. Fund-raisers will be the responsibility of the court and
their parentssponsors to coordinate. The monies raised will help
the participants with travel expenses.
All Royalty Court participants are expected by their conduct, to
represent the Grand Ronde Tribe, their family and themselves with
integrity and gracious spirit at all times. This means that partici
pants must show good judgment by not participating in any ac
tivities that would bring adverse publicity to yourself or the Tribe
while you are a member of the Royalty Court. Full dedication
and preparation to represent the Tribe in a positive way is ex
pected. Participants must be single, childless, never married. Par
ticipants must be alcohol and drug free.
Royalty Court participants and their parentsponsor must attend
all required events (Pow-Wows, parades, fund-raisers, organiza
tional meetings, and others as assigned.) Absences can be prear
ranged with the Royalty Committee Advisor. Three unexcused
absences will result in disqualification from the Royalty Court.
Please note that participants will receive 1 point for every event.
Royalty Court participants will be expected to stay for the dura
tion of events. This includes helping to set up for events such as
meetings and parades, as well as dancing in Grand Entry and stay
ing until the flags are retired unless pre-approved with the Roy
alty Committee Advisor. Participants will be expected to speak
in front of large groups of people. Royalty Court participants
must be willing and able to dance. Remember: You are all a part
of one team and mil be expected to treat yourselves, running mates
and others with respect at all times.
Royalty Court participants will be judged at the Royalty Court
Pageant at the annual August Pow-Wow. Participants will be
judged on dance, speech, attendance to required events, interview
questions, and ticket sales. Participants are required to make at
least one article of their regalia.
ANY MISCONDUCT WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DIS
QUALIFICATION FROM THE ROYALTY COURT AND WILL
NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER AGAIN.
Must have a parentsponsor who will accompany Royalty Court
participants to events as well as help coordinate fund-raisers and
related events.
