His par ents were Louis and Lena Mary Vivette. His sisters were the late Laurie Legachinsky and Marie Logan. Leonard remembers fondly growing up in Grand Ronde. He played with the Hudson sisters and helped gather hazel switches for basket making. His duty with the switches was to lay them in the river clay banks to keep them moist and change their color. He also remembers being the "only boy with all those girls." At the age of 12, Leonard and his sisters were sent to Chemewa Indian School. While at Chemewa, Leonard met Marge Hoptowit, an enrolled Yakama tribal member, they mar ried after graduation. They moved to Yakama and raised their seven children. Today, they have 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Leonard and Marge live in Medicine Valley on the Yakama Reservation. Together, they gather roots, smoke venison, can fruits, and travel to the Oregon Coast. While in Oregon, Leonard enjoys gathering mussels, visiting the Elders Mealsite, and attending the Grand Ronde Pow-wow. Internship and Scholarship available The Heritage CollegeOregon Community Foundation Grant will provide a one year internship and scholarship for a Native American Environmental Science student from the State of Oregon. The internship will be paid for approximately 16 hours per week per semester at Heritage College, the Yakama Indian Nation or the Pacific Northwest Laboratory.
