Thousands join Pow-wow weekend fun
Another successful Pow-wow enhanced by singing,
drumming, dancing, good food, exercise, and sum
mer heat filled the weekend of August 20th. Thou
sands of tribal and non-tribal visitors stopped in for a
look at the latest crafts and to relax in the sunshine.
In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of World War
II, this year's Pow-wow honored the tribal veterans
who have represented their Tribe and their country by
serving in the Armed Forces. Tribal Council presented
each veteran with a Pendleton blanket. Veterans of
all ages attended, including many who served in com
bat from World War II to Desert Storm. There
were honor dances held to show respect for all veter
ans, and in memory of those who have passed away.
The 1995 Royalty Pageant, hosted by Cam i lie Mer
rier, was held Friday evening. The judges were: Kath
ryn Harrison, Diane Lane, and Joann Merrier. Halona
Butler was crowned Grand Ronde Tiny Tot. Diana
Robertson was crowned Junior Miss Grand Ronde,
and Courtney Galligher was crowned Senior Miss
Grand Ronde. They will represent the Tribe at many
events during the next year.
On Saturday, about 2,000 guests lined up for the
annual feast at the Community Center, while others
bought Indian tacos and fresh-squeezed lemonade
from one of the many vendors. Natural Resources,
Public Works, and Spirit Mountain Gaming, Inc. had
information booths where people could stop and visit
about upcoming jobs or new program developments.
If you know of a veteran who was not present at the
Pow-wow to receive a blanket, please contact Jackie
