She has two brothers: Vernon Mercier of Salem and Vincent Mercier of Beaverton. Her sister Blanch passed away. Opal was educated in Grand Ronde and Lincoln City. Like many Grand Ronde tribal elders, she also attended Chemawa In dian School as a girl. Opal has lived all of her life in the Willamette Valley, close to the Tribe. She worked as a hairdresser in McMinnville and Lincoln City when she was younger. In 1946, Opal married Loran (Dave) Davidson. They had five children together: Terri, who lives in Dayton, Gene, a resident of Grand Ronde, Loran, also of Grand Ronde, Harry, who lives in Yamhill, and April, who lives in Portland. So, Opal's children stayed close to where they were raised. She has thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Since her husband passed away, Opal has been living in Sheridan. Her favorite pastime is visiting friends and family. Local couple announce engagement t . ' r Danny Joe Ellis and Angela Childers Bedortha are engaged to be married on September 30, 1995. They will be wed at the Salt Creek Baptist Church in Dallas, Oregon. Pastor Darwin Grimm will be officiating the ceremony. Both were raised in Grand Ronde. Angie is a Grand Ronde tribal member. She is the daugh ter of Jess and Candy Robertson of Grand Ronde, and the late Raymond Childers. Her grand i parents are Gladys Childers, the late Elmer Childers, and Alberta Riggs George. Angie attended Willamina High School and graduated in 1990 from Chemeketa Community College with an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. For the past three years, she has been teaching in Grand Ronde for YCAP Head Start. Danny is the son of Wes and Connie Hamock of Grand Ronde. He is the grandson of Mabel Lampher, Bill Morris, and the late Hazel Morris. He also attended Willamina High School. He took courses in au tomotive painting at Lane Com munity College. Danny cur rently works for Capital Con crete as a cement mason. The couple have known each other for most of their lives, and began dating nearly 5-12 years ago. They became engaged dur ing the Christmas holiday. Casino training classes available Training in several casino job areas are being held throughout the month of August in differ ent locations. Classes are just a few hours long and offered in customer service, food handling, cash handling, and telephone skills. They will be held in Grand Ronde, Salem, and Woodburn. Tuition is free for tribal mem bers. Non-members will be charged $45 for each class, ex cept food handling, which is $12. For more information, please contact Tribal Education Divi sion at 879-2275. Congrats to elder for her Olympic victory Congratulations to tribal member Catherine Russell, who entered the 1995 Senior Olym pics. She won the Gold medal in the bowling competition, held at Sunset Lanes in Beaverton. Catherine said that she thought she did well, but was very sur prised when she found out she got the gold. Excellent job, Catherine! Subsistence salmon distribution The Fish & Wildlife Department has been distributing salmon to en rolled tribal members. The last dates for General Membership is Au gust 16, 17, and 18 from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. You must present your Tribal ID card in order to pick up fish. If you are picking up fish for another tribal member you must have that persons Tribal ID card and a note giving you permission to do so. Due to problems in the past, these rules will be strictly enforced. No fish will be distributed without an ID card and a note. For further information call Karen Larsen at 879-2376. Special craft class offered on August 26 On Saturday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Center, a special glass bead-making class will be offered. Each partici pant will need to bring their own small, camp-size propane tank with nozzle. Other supplies will be provided for tribal members.
