II Iveryyear, Smoke Signals publishes personal statements from every Tribal
Jr Council candidate who submits an article. All fourteen nominees and
1LJ their photos are featured in the following pages. We hope this information
is helpful in deciding who your next three Tribal Council members should be. The
candidates are featured in the order they will appear on your ballot.
My wife Liz and I have three chil
dren. Angela will be entering her
second year of Law School in the
fall, Shonn will be a Junior and
Dustin will be a Freshman at
Clackamas Community College. I
have lived in the Grand Ronde area
all my life, with the exception of
serving two years in the Marine
Corps. I am currently Vice-Chairman
of the Timber Committee, and
have also been very active in com
munity youth activities.
Being a concerned tribal member,
I have attended nearly all of the
Tribal Council and General Coun
My name is Pam Warren. Iam
the daughter of Phil and Reita
Warren, granddaughter of
Blanche Lillard, great-granddaughter
of Delia Michelle, and
great-great-granddaughter of Joe
and Maryann Michelle.
I work for the Tribe as the sec
retary for the Tribal Family Ac
tion Program. I have been work
ing for the Tribe for 1-12 years.
Though I really enjoy my position
and the work that I do for tribal
cil meetings for the past four or five
years. These meetings have given
me the education and opportunity
to learn the needs and wants of tribal
members. There are a lot of issues
that have come up over this time
however, I have noticed there are
three prominent issues I feel I need
to address: per capita, health secu
rity, and education assistance.
At this time I feel it is important
to use our income to offer tribal
members the best services possible,
and not put these in jeopardy. When
we establish what our income from
the casino will consist of, then it will
members in need, joining the
Tribal Council would be my op
portunity to help all tribal mem
bers and is a position I would be
willing to give up to dedicate my
time and energies to this high
honor.
There are so many hot issues on
the board today that it is hard to
focus on which one is the most
important. What's number one for
one group of people may not be
for another. The thing to remem

be more relevant to discuss per
capita payments. Per capita pay
ments would be the fairest way to
distribute excess income, if that is
what the people want.
1 feel the Health Security System
is something that is needed and has
been needed for a long time. It is
one of the fairest ways to serve tribal
members inside and outside of the
Six County Service Area.
Having all three of my children
involved in the Tribe's Higher Edu
cation Program, I see the impor
tance of educating our tribal mem
bers. I also see the ideas and expe
ber is that at the top of everyone's
list should be "Tribal Members."
Can we afford to lose sight of the
flame that burns within us all?
There is a unity and a bond of
community that holds us together
no matter where our paths take us.
Should the benefits of being a
tribal member extend only to
those who choose to live in our
service area? Absolutely NOT!
Are you less cf a tribal member
because you live in Lincoln City
rience they bring back to our Tribe.
As I see more and more students
entering into the education pro
grams every year, 1 feel that by put
ting more money into educating our
people, we increase the chances of
having educated people working for
our Tribe.
The future of our Tribe is educat
ing our people and keeping them
healthy. As you can see, I have a
real interest in our Tribe and would
greatly appreciate your vote and
support in September. I will do my
best to represent the people and their
concerns.
or New York City? Absolutely
NOT! I truly believe that health
care coverage, housing assistance,
retirement benefits, education as
sistance and per capita are impor
tant issues. I realize that as a
Council member, all of these is
sues are important and as a Coun
cil member I would be open
minded to all the issues which are
important to tribal members.
They all need to be given our full
attention and consideration.
