Entrepreneur of the Month Shriver Farms and Christmas By Tracy Dugan Bernadine Shriver, a tribal member living in Troutdale, Or egon owns and operates Shriver Farms with her husband Doug. Located on 40 acres of farm land, the Shrivers lease the land from Doug's parents. During the past 8 years, they have cultivated Christmas trees, raspberries, and nursery stock. Buyers come from all over the west to purchase trees the Shrivers grow from seedlings. They have successfully grown all types. Said Bernadine, "Incense Cedar is our most popular seller, but we also sell Douglas Fir, White, Fir, Spruce, and Noble Fir. Those are only a few." "From Thanksgiving to Christ mas, we have U-cut Christmas trees, too," she said. On the day I interviewed her, Bernadine was outside on the farm, waiting for the tribal elders to come in their van. She invited them to pick raspberries. "Raspberry season usually lasts about a month in the summer," she said. "We pick them and take grows berries trees them to the cannery." Bernadine said that this year the cold weather caused some of her three acres of raspberry patches to freeze. "We grow Willamette Raspber ries," Bernadine said. "Other farms grow different varieties, that can be picked later in the berry season." Operating their nursery requires a license, which has to be renewed every year. Bernadine's day usually begins with getting up early to cut the flowers she grows. She also has a flower stand near her home and sells them every day in the sum mer months. She then heads up to the farm and spends the rest of the day working in the fields or nursery. Bernadine worked in a nursery for ten years, then resigned in 1988 to work on her own farm. Doug and Bernadine have em ployed a few seasonal workers, but mostly have done all the plant ing and digging themselves. For more information about Shriver Farms please call (503)663-7624.
