Jeff Dalton, project manager for Drake Construction, estimates about four more weeks of steel work before hiring will begin for other jobs. "We're going to need some spe cialized workers right around the first of June," he said. "When we begin bridge construction, I hope to bring back some of the previous concrete crew to work on that." Five tribal members were em Tribal Council Spotlight Vice-Chair has earned respect in Indian Country Almost anytime something is going on in Grand Ronde, Kathryn Harrison is there. And she's been there since the very beginning. She talks about the early '80s with a fondness a fondness that comes with a memory of the way things used to be. Kathryn says, "Sometimes I'll ask someone about restoration. I'll say 'Remember when...' and then it will dawn on me, that there aren't many people left who were around dur ing that time." There's a certain amount of sat isfaction and pride that comes with that sort of achievement. And where the Grand Ronde Tribe is concerned, restoration was the most important achievement ever. Kathryn has served on Tribal Council since 1 980, except for one year when she was off. She moved back to Grand Ronde in the late '70s and began to attend meetings. It was then when she got involved in restoration. "I'd like to see more culture de veloped in the Tribe," she said. "Our culture isn't lost, but we can regain it with our youth." Kathryn also likes the idea of more programs for elders. Maybe ployed on the concrete crew, and hopes that tribal members with ex pertise in other construction areas will be interested in working at the site. "Tribal members don't have to join our union to work on this project," Dalton said. "But if some one is interested in a career with us, we encourage them to inquire about it. There are good chances for ad vancement beyond this casino project." Drake Construction also built the new Rose Garden Blazer arena, as well as the health clinic for the Warm Springs Tribe. If you are interested in working on the casino project this summer, contact Carol Scott at (503) 879 2846. If possible, please stop by in person to sign up.
