Council spotlight on Gene Labonte
Gene Labonte is the latest Tribal
Council member to be featured in the
Council Spotlight.
He was elected last year and is al
most one-third of the way through
his term.
This is Gene's second time on
Council, he was a member back in
1987-90.
Gene was born and raised in
Grand Ronde and attended Clover
leaf School. He married his wife
Gail, and moved to the Springfield
area where he has owned several businesses and raised his five children.
Now he lives in Sheridan. In addition to the businesses he has owned,
Gene also has worked in the woods, and maintains a strong interest in the
timber industry.
"I am the Tribal Council liaison to the Timber Committee," said Gene.
"And I represent the Tribe at the Inter-Tribal Timber Council conven
tions." Gene will be attending the 17th annual convention this month in
Yakima.
In the next two years Gene wants to focus his attention on other impor
tant issues, as well. "I'm interested in housing, health, and setting up a
retirement plan for our elders," he said.
Of the tribal casino, Gene said he wants it to be a catalyst for other
businesses that can help pave the way for a profitable future.
"I believe that gaming, although profitable, may not last long because
you never know when the government will change and do away with it."
Gene said that there are many other economic opportunities for the Tribe.
In his spare time, Gene enjoys working on cars. He always had a
passion for the older vintage models. He says his favorite time was the
50's, when people didn't have to lock their doors at night and life seemed
to be at a slower pace.
Gene doesn't have much spare time anymore, though. "Being on Coun
cil is really a full-time job," he said.
USD needs survey volunteers
The Grand Ronde Human Services Division is
offering a $50 prize for one man and one woman
to participate in a health assessment survey from
April to July.
The survey asks questions of tribal people about
their health and the results will reveal trends about
our health status.
Since restoration, the Tribe, through our Hu
man Service Division, has developed many pro
grams, and this survey is one way to show which
programs are making a difference in the commu
nity. Participants will be randomly selected from all
tribal members by enrollment number. Those in
dividuals who are chosen will be eligible to enter
the drawing.
Surveyors will be coming to tribal members in
April, May, and June as they collect information.
The results will be available in September.
If you have any questions please contact Bonnie
Tom at (503) 879-5211.
