Low Spring Chinook count sparks
A record low count for Spring
Chinook is a clear statistic of the
salmon crisis. Sen. Slade
Gorton, D-Wash., said Jan 1 9

salmon may be so high some
species of the endangered fish

extinct. "It's a clear possibility.
It's a possibility anyway, no
matter what we do," Gorton told

It's hard to imagine, but
spring is right around the cor
ner. You've gotten through the
winter, the holidays, and 1995
came before you knew it. And
now it's already time to start
thinking about the 1995 pow
wow. When I was younger, my fam
ily took me to a couple of pow
wows, but I was never as in
volved in tribal activities as
many of the youth are now.
Tribal youth have a great op
portunity to participate in tribal
events. There are sober dances,
Roller Molar skating parties,
sporting activities, fairs, sum
mer camp, Family Math and
Science, and various cultural ac
tivities. The pow-wow is one
of the largest of these. A great
way for young women to in
volve themselves with the Tribe
is through Grand Ronde Royalty
Court.
By participating in Royalty
Court, young women have the
chance to become role models
for the girls in our tribe. It's one
of the most important responsi
bilities a young women can
have, and one of the most re
warding. Not only is it an opportunity
to learn about tribal culture and
traditions, but it's a chance to
meet other girls with the same
