By Linda Mann, RDH For a change this month, I would like to share some light-hearted dental trivia with you. You can impress you friends and family with your dental knowledge. Have fun. DID YOU KNOW? 1. Special toothpaste was invented for astronauts to use during space travel. It is almost impossible to rinse your mouth out in zero gravity, so scientists developed a toothpaste that the astronauts could swallow. 2. George Washington's wooden teeth were not made of wood at all. The first president's dentures were made from hippopotamus, walrus, and cow's teeth, and also elephant tusk. 3 . The first toothbrush was invented in China in the 1 5th century. Before that, people cleaned their teeth (but not very well) by chewing on small twigs. 4. Animals get toothaches, too. Mike, a polar bear in Chicago, had a bad toothache from eating too many marshmallows tossed to him by visitors to the zoo. He had to have his tooth pulled. Wit 5. In 460-377 B.C., ancient Greeks used pumice, talc, emery, ground alabaster, coral powder, and iron rust as toothpaste. Fingers were used as a toothbrush to cleanse the teeth. (Aren't you glad we have Crest and Colgate now?) 6. In 1845, pacifiers or tecthers were made from coral and used to help the eruption of teeth in children. There is evidence they were used earlier also. DENTAL CLINIC NEWS As of press time, we still do not have a full-time dentist, but recruiting efforts are underway. If you are in urgent need of fillings or cleansings, please feel free to call and we will update you on the status of a dentist. There will be a part time temporary dentist for a few days in January.
