December 1994 Page 4 Tribal Life Smoke Signals Tribal news briefs and upcoming events Christmas tree sale The Fish and Wildlife Committee will be selling Christmas trees this year. The price of the trees will be $10 each. You can pick up your tree at the Forestry office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. If you have any questions regarding Christmas trees please call Karen Larsen at 879-5522. The money we receive will go towards the Tribal Christmas baskets and future Fish and Wildlife projects. Final salmon distribution The Fish and Wildlife Committee will hold a third and final salmon distribution on Dec. 4, after the General Council meeting. The hours of the distribution will be from 1-4 p.m. If you wish to pick up salmon for another tribal member, you must have the member's identification card and a note. Contact Fish and Wildlife for further information. Position open on Timber Committee apply now Applications are now being accepted for a position on the Tribe's Timber Committee. The deadline is Dec. 31. Contact Connie Holmes, Secretary Treasurer for more information. WellnessPrevention starts after school club Community youth are invited to join the WellnessPrevention After School Club at the Health modular building. It is for all ages. Some of the activities the club has sponsored are: crafts, pumpkin carving, puppets, games, Christmas ornament making, movies, and much more! Tribal member honored Renee Lane, daughter of Dorothy Lawe and sister of Diane Lane, was recently honored for her excellent performance of clerical duties at Chemawa Indian School, and her performance as a volunteer for groups such as the Combined Federal Campaign and Leukemia Association's March of Dimes. She is also a counselor at Chemawa. Drum and dance practice Everyone is welcome to attend drum and dance practice at the Tribal Community Center on Dec. 1,15, and 29 from 6:30-8 p.m. Small children must be accompanied by an adult. New craft store in area Busy Hands Handmade Crafts opened up last month In Grand Ronde, next to the Grand Ronde Shopping Center. Local arts and The After School Club will feature a special member every month in the newsletter. Special member for the month of October was Andrea Mercier. Andrea, age 4, was chosen for her excellent behavior and willingness to keep trying. Andrea has a warm and bubbly personality, and gets along well with all club members. Housing Advisory Board selected last month Congratulations to the following tribal members who have been selected to serve on the Housing Advisory Board: Pam Warren (Willamina), Janell Haller (Willamina), Dakota Whitecloud (Grand Ronde), Shelley Hansen (Salem), Tim Holmes (Willamina), Linda Hale (Salem), Ken Schmid (Grand Ronde), Ed Larsen (Grand Ronde), Leon Tom (Salem), and Mel Holmes (Salem). They will have a big job ahead of them, working with policy details of a new housing program for tribal members. MLP Associates, a Eugene based consulting firm with experience in housing assessments, is working with the Housing staff to prepare a needs assessment based on the recent Housing survey. The Advisory Board will be assisting department staff in the development of a long-range housing plan for tribal members. The basis of this plan will be the needs assessment and suggestions from the tribal community. Tribe. She is the daughter of Mark and Rennee Mercier, and the sister of Jene and Eric, who are also club members. November special club member was Mickey Hoopingarner, age 9. He has a special willingness to help staff and other club members, and a great attitude. Mickey is the son of Yvonne Hoopingarner and the grandson of Patti Hoopingarner. Royalty and pow-wow volunteers sought; poster contest information The Pow-wow Committee is looking for Royalty members. The Pow-wow Committee and Royalty Committees work together to organize the Royalty Court and events during pow-wow. Some job duties are: Organ ize floats and attend parades. Organize fund-raisers for Royalty. Attend all required events which includes all parades and pow-wows. Be on call for special events or requests. Attend monthly Pow-wow meetings. Attend dance classes. Help organize Royalty girls and coordinate events with their parents. The Pow-wow Committee is also in need of volunteers to serve on a special Drum Committee.
