Tribe offers General Assistance Program
The Grand Ronde Tribe will
assume the responsibility for
providing General Assistance to its
members beginning October 1,
1994. The General Assistance
Program will be operated under the
Health and Human Services
Division, Family Action Program.
General Assistance will be
integrated into other services
provided by the division.
Current Clients
Current clients who have been
determined eligible for General
Assistance by the Bureau of Indian
Affairs, Siletz Agency, will have
their cases transferred to the Tribe,
effective October 1. If you are a
General Assistance recipient and
have not contacted the Intake
Referral Specialist, Sheila Elliot,
please do so as soon as possible.
Her office is located in the Tribal
Family Action Program building.

Ila Hudson Dowd was born one of
fourteen children on November 25,
1908. Her parents were Hattie and
John Hudson.
Ila married Joseph Dowd and
had one daughter, Joyce Ham. She
now has three grandchildren: Alan,
Daniel, and Francine, and one great
granddaughter. Ila spent her early years teaching
and raising her daughter. Later she
worked in a cannery in Salem and
retired from there after 26 years of
work.
Ila has two living sisters: Velma
Mercier and Martha Mercier. Her
other sisters, Pearl Mercier,

It is the goal of the Human

activities as well as tribal functions.
She can almost always be seen at
meetings and cultural activities.
Ila is one of the few tribal
members who can speak Chinook
jargon and is often asked to give the
blessing at tribal functions.

application process. The Universal
Intake will be reviewed and
recommendations will be provided
to the client on services available to
them. The focus is to provide each
applicant with a positive approach
to their un-met needs rather than
focusing only on the emergent of
."crisis" condition. We want to
provide each member with an
assessment and a plan that will
address long-term needs and
benefits.

Sanitary District
gives thanks
The Grand Ronde Sanitary
District is grateful to the Tribe for
$5,000 that has been used to
improve the sewer system.
The project is directed at reducing
storm and winter rain water from
draining into the sewer system and
overloading it
The work included installing
man-hole liners and repairing two
man holes; repairing a wet rail;
replacing clean-cut caps and
providing some equipment for the
work; repairing a septic system and
digging a pit for debris disposal.
District Clerk Sandra J. Roselle
wrote: "Theboard wishes to express
their sincere gratitude to the
Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde...Thank you very much, we
definitely appreciate what you have
done."
District chairwoman Eleanor
Kimsey also wrote a letter
expressing thanks to the Tribe for
their interest in the community.

Tribe receives grant
The Gannett Companies Fund
has awarded the Grand Ronde
Tribe a $3,000 grant to be used
for cultural education and craft
classes. The Gannett Co. made
contributionsto seven non-profit
agencies in Gannett
communities.
Wheelchair needed
The elders are in need of a good
used wheelchair to carry on to the
bus for those that cant walk long
distances. Ifyouknowofoneata

a wheelchair to the elders, please

Pow-wow Committee i : : r
The Pow-wow Committee is
looking for Royalty members. The
Royalty Committee and Pow-wow
Committee work together to
organize the Royalty Court and
other events for the pow-wow.
Some of the job duties are:
Organize floats and attend

Organize fund-raisers for Royalty ,
Attend all required events which
include four parades and four pow
wows. Be on-call for special events or

Drum Committee
The Pow-wow Committee is in
need of volunteers to serve on the
Drum Committee. Members of
the Drum Committee are
responsible for signing up drums
for pow-wow, providing the
drummers with lunch tickets,
refreshments during drumming
sessions, and attending monthly
pow-wow meetings.
