They have a lot planned for this year, and leading the rommittee in its endeavors is Chairperson Arleen Beck. Arleen was appointed Chair of the committee by fellow members and feels privileged to serve in that capacity. She encourages ideas and input from all Grand Ronde Elders, not just committee members. She said, "I'd like to see more Elders come to the mealsite and tribal activities. So many people have something to offer...even if it's just being social and visiting." Arleen grew up in this area, but has just recently moved back from Brookings, Oregon where she lived for many years. Her sister, Val Grout, also on the committee, serves on Council. The committee's goal is to explore the different programs and services that benefit or affect Elders and talk about implementing new services which seem to be needed. "Some of the things we plan on talking about at the meetings are Elder's activities that are planned each year. For example, the trip to Warm Springs for Pi-Um-Sha Days, the crab feed at the coast, and other trips,'' explained Arleen. The Committee is also planning to attend a conference on aging in Spokane this August. Any Elder is invited to participate in these activities, and the committee helps with transportation, funding, and lodging when they can. They have an annual budget, and also raise money putting on bake sales at Tribal General Meetings and other events. The Elders' Committee also discusses the long-term future of the Tribe; housing, the health clinic, and how the Tribe is growing overall. Elders' Committee meetings are held the last Thursday of every month at the Tribal Community Center, after the senior birthday meal. All are welcome. Vice Chair of the Committee is Clarice Ellison, and Secretery is Marion Forster.
